1890 Morgan grade input—MS65-66...or UNC Details (cleaned cheek)?

1890 Morgan is currently in Grading/Quality Control status at NGC, as I write this. Surfaces seem good to me...with the possible exception of the cheek. There are some hairlines present, though viewed through 5x and 10x magnification, I still don't know whether or not it'll be classified as cleaning.

So, to my eye, either it's MS gem...or it's UNC DETAILS/CLEANED, though the latter seems kind of a harsh judgement to me. Since it will likely mean the difference of a couple of zeroes on the bottom line, value-wise, I thought I'd submit it to all you much more experienced at grading than I am for any feedback.

    Thanks in advance!

The images are too dark to grade the coin.

Absolutely a beautiful coin. Your grading is right on. Without coin in hand I would say MS 65D +. No signs of cleaning on photo shot, but dipping although not noticeable could always be a factor. Why NGC ? best grade ? PCGS is best for resale value.

Photo's are good enough that I can see the beautiful luster. If it was dipped, then it was done right.

Well after working with the pictures a bit - I think its a 64 if they do not details grade it. The Cheek is really not my problem not the neck but a swipe/ mark above the bonnet looks like it might be an issue. It is a long mark going from the bonnet "bun" to the corn stalk. The reverse coloring looks slightly cleaned and has retoned in areas. I am a 50/50 on this one on if it will grade. Good Luck

It might be a lighting anomaly but without in hand ...

I don’t see any indication of cleaning in your photos. I’m not sure if that’s because the coin isn’t cleaned, or your photos don’t show the hairlines you’re referring to. Nothing to do but wait for the grades to come back now, anyway. :)

Agree with a 64 designation. If the luster is impaired, it could 62.

Luster looks weird. It almost looks like the coin was polished. Of course, I can’t really tell from those pictures, but I don’t like the coin’s overall appearance.

The 1890 Morgan Dollars were not well made. They usually have indifferent luster and less than robust strikes. They not as bad as worst New Orleans Mint coins, but they not as nice other dates. Getting one into an MS-65 or higher holder is very difficult.

The current coin looks typical. If there is smoothing on the cheek, the photos are not showing it. I would say MS-64.

I'm going with MS64 only because I need better pictures.

Yeah, I wish I'd taken additional photos before sending it off.

I see what you mean on that obverse mark. I do think it's at least partly lighting...and I hope it's not something I overlooked.

Here's to hoping you and I are right!

Going with NGC? It's partly because of recommendations—whether accurate or not—as to their customer service over PCGS when I started about a year ago. I do also prefer their holders slightly over PCGS. But mostly it's because I tend to be pretty loyal once I've made a decision. I could definitely be persuaded to switch, as my knowledge is still very limited—though I had heard about PCGS resale value. Apples to apples, that seems to be true.

Do you believe NGC is more generous with their grades? I'm aware of this debate...but I really don't know the facts or truth on this. So much to learn....

    All the best,
    Dave

IMHO NGC is VERY generous with their grading standards. I suppose that could be a factor of why PCGS graded coins sale higher.
