Are there certain grading services you prefer over others for specific coins? I have some MS FB Mercury Dimes from a set which I believe are worthy of slabbing. I usually use (and buy from) PCGS for pre 1945 mint state or more rare specimens in my collection, which don't qualify for "BU" status. I honestly try to buy the coin and not the slab, but still trust PCGS's standards above others in most instances. Does anyone believe NGC or say ANACS or ICG would be just as accurate on my MS FB MERCURY DIMES? I do know their prices bring less at auctions most of the time, and the price guides also reflect lower prices on FB Mercs for the most part.
I buy the coin, not the slab. But the high end materiel I own is either PCGS or NGC, and NO other. I tolerate NGC and PCGS slabs, and rather loathe those of other TPG's. And what is ANACS thinking with theirs?
I own pcgs, ngc, anacs, and pci slabs, none of them by design. Every single purchase was me buying the coin, the holder is irrelevant
When it comes to things such as FB, FBL, FS, and FH, NGC is really the best choice. They are harder on the coins and therefor the ones that get through are really NICE. When it comes to Franklin Half Dollars, NGC will only slab it FBL if ALL (top and bottom) lines are full. PCGS only looks at the bottom lines. The same is true for the rest of the sets. Speedy
I probably have more old ANACS slabs than any other, but I think the NGC slabs I have are probably the best.
Thanks Speedy! From what you're saying, NGC looks like my best choice for FB Mercury Dimes, since I always strive to get the most conservative, accurate designations from grading companies. I really appreciate the info about Franklin FBL's too, since I have a complete set of which over half should qualify for NGC's standards. As others have said, I also try to buy the coin and not the slab. However, at auction times, even on ebay, time and time again PCGS and NGC slabs always seem to bring the higher price! I intend to give a much closer look at NGC standards when making a decision about whom to submit my FB Mercs. Your comparitive info on the two leading services, like info in all of your posts has been and IS VERY helpful! Thanks again!!
I use NGC since I'm an ANA member and I don't have to pay to join. If a coin is questionable with respect to cleaning, then I use ANACS. When I buy I stick strictly to PCGS and NGC. I've got an NGC Registry set and the only accept PCGS and NGC.
I buy the coin and not the holder, but PCGS and NGC have the highier resale values. I also like ICG and ANACS because I don't bother with modern slabs anyway so the coins I get in their slabs have to be spot on. PCGS is the only TPG service that guarantees copper for color. I still buy copper from other services if the coin is all there.
Sure, buy the coin not the holder, but I've never liked PCGS' holders. I much prefer NGC's, and I like ANACS' last "generation" best of all. Personal preference
Really? I didn't know that and That is something I need to know as I do collect frankies.... thanks for the info stainless
For submissions, I prefer NGC. Cheaper, faster turnaround, and I feel they are more coinsistent. Also, for marginal coins, they will still slab as NCS authentic, which is worth a little consolation - better than a body bag. I've always preferred the PCGS slab, especially for smaller coins. As far as purchasing - we all agree we're buying the coin. I have a problem with the so-called "PCGS premium" - I'm not sure it's reality. So I don't have a preference.
Premium for a slab is reality SOMETIMES.......wierd huh? I use both NGC and PCGS for normal coins, and have a pile of variety coins ready for ANACS....... I have submission going out tommorow, a 1922 NoD, a 1909-S Indian Cent, a cpl 14-D's and a 1928 Peace Dollar, all to PCGS...why? Perceived premium in the market. Some of these recent Ebay prices are just plain freaking me out, while Teletrade, Heritage, DLRC and shows you can buy " closer to the coin ". On the other hand, I only know one series well and you know which one it is.
The ironic thing is that NGC is harder on the FB designation and looser on the grade iteslf, particularly on the high-end. All IMHO...Mike
