Welcome to CT Glenn. You nickel appears to be environmentally toned, not plated. It has just taken on a light gold color appearance. NAV. no added value.

Just a matter of hanging out in the right (or wrong) environment. Sometimes exposure to heat can cause that kind of color, but given the other dark stuff down in the recessed areas, I'm thinking it was some substance that got on the coin. Anything from a spilled soft drink to something more exotic.

I agree with our fellow enthusiasts; environmental toning and/or damage. If you CRH for a bit, you'll see far worse and far better. There is a spectrum of looks out there.

That means when you got it it was already nearly twenty years old, right? There's plenty that could have happened to it during that time, believe me. :)

Glenn, there are things (ie, chemicals) within a "safe" that can cause this, especially if it was in a gun safe. Your coin was subjected to a contaminant during its life, and it is now manifested in its appearance.

    Welcome to CT!

The coin is a 68 and you've had it for 30 years. That leaves 22 years. In those 22 years of circulation it was damaged. The toning, however it occurred, is what you see today.
