Extremely interesting question Ben and many of us are in our own way. BQ you are a force for educating. This is why I quote you.

At the coin shop I am a "force" to many newbies. I'm also an idiot when they come in and ask what is the newest mint issue etc. Why? - because I don't care but I stumble around it.

I find being honest works real well. "I'll check with the boss because I'm into older stuff". This is a drawback I'm working on.

On the other hand in "regular" life I can be a force. I can teach people a lot, refer them to places like CT (no lie) and enhance the learning experience.

Back to work. My boss has probably forgotten more than I know. My strong points there? Quick research as he is very inept on computers.
Small size currency. He just hands it to me on most occasions and asks my opinion.
Two Cent Pieces. He knows I love them. He bought an 1864 today and asked me if it was a small motto. It wasn't but rotated die so I bought it.

Bottom line here is we are all a force in some capacity. Be it what we are strong at OR weak at. Someone who is weak at a subject just may ask THE question that no one else ever thought about.

Knowing a certain subject even farily well can help someone that does not have a clue.

We can't all be Breen etc. We can all contribute. We are all forces in some way.

Another ramble brought to you by......

    Dont be so humble Clembo,
I keep looking in CoinWorld for a picture of you in a suit and tie holding a Roman Numeral High Relief in a slab with a green sticker on it and admiring it for the camera while your attractive female assistant is busy on the phone in the background.

I'll lay it out straight here, and suck up a little while I do it.

There are 2 people I know who do more coin dealing and "numismatisting" in one week than most of us do in a month. Jason " Budgood " and Chris " Cavetroll", and possible Zaneman.

When I have a situation in which I need a pro opinion and an answer I can take to the bank.......those 2 are my go to guys.

    Nuff said.

And to think I can remember when they (Chris & Zane) were rookies

Give credit where it's due, they've both come a long, long ways :thumb:

I cannot forget ( I did ) Mark Feld either. It was just yesterday he helped me with a situation that I thought was out of line. When it comes to certain things only Mark would be the guy I ask.

As far a being a force, definately no.

I really could care less about coins (besides going to the coin shop with Dad on weekends in the 70's) until after my dad died and I inherited his collection in 2003. As the months passed I began to look at the coins more often. I soon realized that besides photo's the only tangible items I had to remember him were his coins.

For the past four years, I have been finishing dads collections and have spent way too much money on coins.

There are not as many young people interested in coins these days, most would rather watch video games or MTV.

As much as my wife dislikes it, I "push" my hobby on my daughter, nieces, nephews and visitors. On many occasions I have taken some coins from my safe (the good ones are in my safe deposit box) and showed them to company. I even bring coins to work and have introduced some of my friends at work to the hobby. For the past two years I only give proof sets as birthday presents to my nieces and nephews.

I'm definately not a force, but I will keep the fire burning, that I promise.

Worked in the outdoor sporting goods industry for over a decade, and had the opportunity to meet some writers/guides/personalities. Some couldn't fish or shoot any better than you or I, but they could write or guide or personalize (?) very well. It was always the quiet, understated guy with the intelligent wisful, glint whose brain you wanted to pick. I suspect a day on the water with bone; or others in here, would be just such a time.

Don't hold your breath Jack!.... but I think you know what I'm saying.

We all have something to contribute. ANYONE that collects can be, and is, a force in some way.

We all share a passion in one way or another. I've had experiences where some of the "big dogs" forget that the "little dogs" might know a thing or two and where would the "little dogs" learn these things. Passion for the hobby

No one knows everything. Some think they do. They often come off as the biggest fools.

    greetings!
i view this the very same way i view my 37 + yrs in the martial arts (including training w/ legends, instuctor certificates and black belts in various martial arts)...i am a constant beginner. there is always someone out there w/ more knowledge and skill than i have. there are several on here i consider experts and value thier opinions greatly. 4 or 5 have already been mentioned and most certainly doug needs to be credited in this group as well. there are always individuals w/ specialized knowledge in given areas and unfamiliar w/ other areas of coin collecting. i leave my ego at the door...try to contribute if i feel useful, and especially try to learn from those experts. i am and will always be a student and only hope to help when i can, or at least refer them to someone who can.
my very best wishes to all............steve

he never gives me an answer, Cause he gives me links so I can learn it myself

I can usually tell the difference between a dime and a quarter.

    Does that count?

Not a force, not a voice of authority, don't write for numismatic magazines, don't attend club meetings ... guess that sums up to No. Now if we lower the standards a little, so that anybody who tries to not come across as a fool or jerk becomes a force, I may reconsider my status. :D

No way, just a rook, here.

Not sure there is any part of my knowledge even outside the hobby where I would ever say yes to that question. A wise man knows his limitations.

Nope, I'm not an expert by any means of the word. Ask me again in 10 years.

I don't know. I feel very helpful around here sometimes. And I like to think that I had nearly dragged spock over to 'the dark side'. And like many other people said, in real life or at school I'm pretty much the coin guru.

I'm going to go with - not yet, but I'm working on it.

No I'm not a force or an expert in this hobby and never will be one. If you ask me the same question in a 100 years I would reply just the same as I did today. There's just so much to learn in this hobby. Just my opinion but there are some folks here on Coin Talk with a wealth of knowledge that they share with us and that's what keeps me coming back to this forum.
