It must be his standards. Most of the time the young ladies who I see at the show are there with someone and not as a collector. And I can't even think of one time that I thought any of them where "good looking" :hammer:

I totally agree. I was stating when my grandfather was growing up during the depression.

Your point is well said as well. That's why I believe there is going to be a gradual change in our hobby, which is absolutely great!

I hope so! There is so much more long term value in collecting coins then risking it all on Sports cards. Just look at what happened to Michael Vicks cards! If Obama makes it through (which I think he will) it will help out quite a bit. (opinion anyway).

Here in Northern Virginia, Hispanics and Orientals are seen at the shows in slightly larger numbers than blacks, but still it is a white and male dominated hobby with fewer newbies that are young. My wife is a very serious collector and many times is treated like a head of cabbage by some dealers. They get to do that to her ONCE and never again. :')

    Hi Virginian,
'head of cabbage'... now that is what I felt like at the only coin show I have attended, and the old guys at the local coin dealer.
So, what are your wife's techniques?... I need to practice so I can get better treatment in these places.

Is she treated that way because she's a woman ? Frankly, I doubt it. The truth is some dealers treat everyone like a head of cabbage.

Some are operating on a salesman's principle "Whoever speaks first loses" (which I don't believe).

On many occasions, I have seen women receive preferential treatment. This shouldn't surprise anyone.

For instance, I have overheard remarks from male dealers such as "Women are so much smarter than men", which is both untrue and sexist.

They got to do that to me ONCE, and never again ! ;-)

Sometimes when Steve and I go looking for coins they will talk to Steve first, Steve will ask me to look at the coin the person behind the counter will try and explain the coin but instead I will tell them. Steve will tell them I am the coin collector and she knows her coins, They do try and treat me like I am a 'head of cabbage' at first , but they change tone. Have you wife step up and start talking about the coins first.

Once she engages them in conversation and they realize she knows what she is talking about and is super picky....and I mean picky...when grading a coin, they change their tune or she tells them she will never do business with them and will tell others how she was treated. To be honest, she has saved my bacon more than once when I got "buck fever" on a few near impulse buys of overgraded coins.

Not surprising, considering that the vast majority of coin buying is done by men. In fact, any other dealer behavior would be very surprising.

Outside of numismatics, there are many occasions in which it is very difficult for a man to get a word in edge-wise e.g. being with my wife when shopping for a house. The agents, mostly women, always talk mostly to my wife. I don't complain about being treated like a head of cabbage. I assert myself. It gets straightened out.

Similarly, when eating out, they consistently hand me the check, because they are used to the man paying for the woman. The only discrimination there is that, society-wide, the burden of financially providing for the family rests disproportionately on men as a whole.

These things are normal and natural. No reasonable person really believes that men and women are "the same". In any given endeavour, the "under representation" of one gender or the other is explained by our differences far more than by discrimination.

No one complains that men are "under represented" in quilting circles, because we acknowledge the obvious : men and women, when viewed as groups, are so radically different that reasonable people expect some things to be mostly women. It is unreasonable to expect for nothing to be "male dominated". It's also a double standard.

Similarly, no one expects women to do their fair share of back breaking work, such as pouring concrete, building roads or houses. When work is dangerous or destructive to the body, society says "It's a guy thing". There are some women who do this sort of work, but reasonable people concede it is very, very few. Exceptions don't prove the rule.

My wife is an exception all around, she makes close to what I make at work and surprisingly likes a lot of the same things I like, cold hardy tropical gardening, collecting coins, cars, guns and sharing a home with two crazy Brittany Spaniels. Your are correct though, nobody will argue about men doing most of the concrete pouring and women doing most of the quilting. I guess I am fortunate that she likes all these things too and sometimes more than I do. You should see how she scrutinizes slabbed proofs from the 30s and 40s! She is also good at evaluating strike on business issues that amazes me, even through toning that I can't see very well. There are some dealers that are women and my wife knows a few of them, but tends to buy from men and holds her own in the transaction.
