I apologize for the poor pictures. These are what has been purchased. I decided against a high grade 1914-D because once you reach the XF, AU, MS grades we are looking at $500-$3,000. I settled with a VF20 and I am pleased because I can still see some detail and it is verified. I will likely do the same with a 1909-S VDB. Since this is a personal collection of my own, I am pleased. I will get better pictures when I get home.
I don’t understand, XF rating is for paper denomination of currency from what I have read in the red book. Did I miss something.
Thank you! I am just over the moon. I had been researching the 1914-D and it is a pretty penny (pun intended) for a high grade. I just could not swing it. I had looked and looked and XF are typically $700+, AU are typically $1,100+ and then MS is WAY more. Lol I figured a happy medium for my personal collection would be a VF.
To be honest, $200-$250 is the top of the line I feel comfortable spending on a single coin. Just a personal preference. I may change my mind in the future. I have the ability to purchase a XF, AU or MS example of the 1914-D but I could not bring myself to spend those prices. Maybe in the future. I'm just pleased to have a VF20 1914-D.
I hear you but I've spend as much as $4,000 on a single coin. Same with some bank notes. You just save and get it. I strongly believe in buying the best coin or bill you can at the lowest price you can. That was years ago and I still feel good about spending that amount.
That's awesome! At 27 years old with 3 year old twins and a 1 year old, my collecting is on a budget. A higher budget than others my age could likely have but a budget nonetheless. I will likely get a MS60 or better 1914-D and 1909-S VDB but it will be when my kids are older and I'm further along in my career. In the meantime, I am happy with the VF20. It is the best I could afford of this particular coin.
I remember those days but I had 4 kids. I did bitevthe bullet a few times by not buying and saving my money until I could afford the coin I wanted. Every one in awhile my LCS would set the coin aside and let me make payments on it.
That is awesome! I wish I had a LCS. My father-in-law collects as well so we share information but all the coins we get are from eBay or coin shops we find while traveling. I'll likely stick with the less expensive coins for now and leave a MS 1914-D and MS 1909-S VDB for my last coins. Lol
