A good start! I don't think I'll ever tire of these coins.

If you post obverse/reverse of the coins you need help with, someone here can probably attribute them.

This reverse has the inscription GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS (the glory of the army); two soldiers helmeted, standing facing each other, reversed spears in outer hands, inner hands on shields resting on ground, between them two standards. The first two letters "SM" in exergue stand for "Sacra Moneta" (sacred money), but I can't make out the last one. Can you post the obverse?

Larger scans and/or parts of the inscription would be very useful.

    Hi All

This is my first post , so I hope I push all the buttons in the right order:)

The first Roman coin I ever found with a detector was a Gloria Exercitvs reverse type , so they have a special place in my heart !

The SMNA in exergue indicates it was minted in Nicomedia (now Izmit, in Turkey) .

Really nice condition it is too:thumb:

BTW. I think you're right about the Gloria Romanorvm being Valens . Although that reverse was used under a lot of Valentinianic period emperors , in my humble opinion, the spacing of the lettering to the left of the the head looks right for Valens.
    Cheers

On the obv. behind his head i can easily make out val fallowed but 2 letters i cant make them out though but maybe its e n , i dont know if theres anything before the val, that part of the coin is gone.

On the rev. I cant make anything out. except the 2 figures and the chi rho staff/banner and that scan is almost perfect lol, the rev. just sucks.
when I able I'll post better pics of the obv.

thank you for the link I'll go check it out :smile

Ok....IDK if this is right so someone else will have to verify it:

    Valens
    AE3
    Bronze
Obverse: D N VALENS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right
Reverse: GLORIA RO-MANRVM.....Emperor advancing right, looking left, dragging captive with right, standard in left, wreath left, branch right

    RIC IX

......I dont think that is the same coin you have......reverse on your coin has an emperor...which is skinnier than the guy on the coin you copied and pasted

    Ardatirion Où est mon poisson

Both coins show the emperor, remember that ancient coin dies could vary greatly, even within the same mint/officina. Unfortunately, the mintmark on randygeki's AE3 wasn't preserved, so further attribution is unlikely.

PS - stainless, when you say 'AE3' remember you're saying 'bronze coin size three'. To say AE3 - bronze is redundant!

Ohhh...ok, thanks for the help...I thought it was just for size but now I know

    thanks,
