I received a message a few weeks ago from @Severus Alexander telling me that someone had chosen to send some coins from the recent AMCC 2 auction to my family and me. Shock Number 1. Then things got crazy around the holidays. A house with 5 adults, 3 kids, 2 dogs, and 4 cats is ummmm hectic...Well I went to the mail box today just to get a breath of fresh air and there is an envelope from Canada. I took it in and showed the envelop to the kids and man they lit up like the Christmas tree! We opened up the envelope and Shock Number 2 came when we laid eyes on the coins inside. 4 absolutely gorgeous bronze coins. I have taken the best pictures I can of them and we plan on spending the next few days working on identifying them. FFIVN will be taking the lead and honing his identification skills. Right now the plan is to identify 1 per day and post them here as a count down to the final days of 2019. I want to give a big shout out to @tenbobbit for the absolutely generous gift and to @Severus Alexander for sending them to us. They have found a loving home and will make a great addition to our burgeoning collection. I have said it before multiple times and will say it again; This community is filled with some of the best people on the internet. Seriously, you all are amazing. Without further ado, here are the coins. Identifications will be posted as FFIVN figures them out
Wow that is really nice. You don't see this happen to often in our normal every day life you are truly blessed.
The cats have been relegated to the basement while everyone is here. Unfortunately that is where my coin desk where I search through rolls is. I've already come down once to see a desk that had been hit by a tornado. I've piled stuff all over the desk to discourage them from jumping on it but it is just a minor inconvenience to them.
Two of those are a bit trickier than the other two. I expect ffivn can get three pretty easily but I will be proud of him if he gets all four.
I've been looking around to hopefully be able to help him if he gets stuck and I am having the hardest time with #4. We will see how he does
FFIVN decided to start with the FEL TEMP. He likes these designs with the horses and this is the largest one that we have. All of ours before this are ones that we cleaned up last year and most are in less than stellar shape. This one is beautiful. He says that it looks like he is sad and crying. FFIVN started right away with his LRB resource pages and went from tesorillo to wildwinds. This was a pretty straight forward identification though neither of us were able to find one with both the "gamma" and "dot" in the fields on wildwinds. Drum roll please.......... Constantius II AE23 of Constantinople AD 348-351 Obverse: DN CONSTAN-TIVS PF AVG, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right. Reverse: FEL TEMP-REPARATIO, helmeted soldier spearing fallen horseman, who is wearing a Phrygian helmet, no beard, clutching horse's neck. Γ in left field and dot in the center. Mintmark CONSA. EDIT: @Roman Collector helped set us straight and tweak our ID so that it matches RIC VIII 106. Thanks!
FFIVN chose another easier one today...I'm worried how the next 2 days will go now haha. We have a few of these types of coins, all from our cleaning days. However, this is a new one for us because we don't have one with a "M" in the banner nor do we have a TRS mintmark. Most of ours are SIS mints. This coin has a lovely green patina as well. Constantius II AE4 Obverse: CONSTANTIVS P F AVG, rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right Reverse: GLORIA EXERCITVS, two soldiers holding spears and shields with one standard between them; M on banner Mintmark TRS crescent
Sorry about the late reply, away for a few days over the holidays. Glad to see they arrived and are providing a distraction from the holiday chaos ( I know how crazy it can get being the youngest of 9 ) Great work by FFIVN with the ID's but you may have to work a little harder for 1 of the next 2 I too would like to give @Severus Alexander an honorable mention for taking the time and covering the cost to send the coins on, thankyou.
For #4, go to http://www.romancoin.info and use Dane's Excel for Genio. Find the right sheet, and then you need a few filters. Will take a few minutes to find it. Wildwinds is not complete, and i find Tesorilo somhow difficult to use, so i rely a lot on those excels for common LRBs.
We decided to tackle #4 today and phew, what a brute. Thanks to @catadc 's link, we think we figured it out though. I had to help FFIVN navigate the excel sheet since he's ya know, 8. Haha. Anyways here is our final answer. If we are incorrect, please let us know! Galerius Maximian as Caesar AE follis Lugdunum Obverse: MAXIMIANVS NOB C, Laureate and cuirassed bust right Reverse: GENIO POP–VLI ROMANI, Genius standing left, naked, chlamys over left shoulder, holding patera and cornucopiae. Alter to left. A in right field. Mintmark: PLG
Oof. That's a bit much for me at 35. I'm just gonna say that it is out of the realm of possibility for an 8 year old haha.
