Welcome to CT. Did you notice the minor rim dings?

Yes they do. I still see plenty of scratches and dings on the actual coin.

Yes. Definitely not a perfect coin. I have seen much better in my research and much worse.

Yes. I am new to coin collecting so I am still figuring things out as I read things.

I feel it legit though somewhat beat up. The mintmark seems to be a match for #2 I don’t see anything that shows tooling of the mintmark or that it’s a Chinese counterfeit. Perhaps @justafarmer can do an overlay of it

I like yours! Here's mine. I don't trust myself with these level coins to know if they are legit or not. I think ours pretty much look the same.

Very nice! I agree, very similar. Everything is adding up to be a legitimate coin. I'm going to pick up a few more pennies today from the coin shop that I have been researching. I'll send them all in to PCGS. Even if not the greatest condition, I can solidify authenticity.

Might I suggest a cent book? You can display your new treasures and add more as time goes along.

Keep us posted on your progression.

    First photo suggests improper cleaning.
The other photos are better, but it's probably been cleaned at
some point in the last 100 years. If it's real I am OK at $200.
I don't know if it is real or fake, but the 1914-D is one of the
top most counterfeited coins there is. So you really have to know your
coins to buy one raw, and not your intuition about the sellers.

Agree. As much as I hate to say it...you can read my previous posts to confirm this....but in this case, I would only buy a coin that has been slabbed by a TPG. I would never buy one raw. At least not for $200.

I'll send it into PCGS to see.

That said, I also just got a 1931 S PCGS MS-64. I'm looking for the key dates right now.

You are doing it completely backward from the way most collectors do it...but hey, if you have the $$ then I guess you can collect however you choose. :) I have pulled all my coins from circulation since I can't afford to otherwise. I have managed to pull everything minus key dates from circulation. I would love to pull a key from circulation but I doubt that is in the cards. I hope that the 14D comes back legit and you continue to enjoy your collecting journey.

I suspect there are more Chinese fakes in the US than real with a grade of XF or more as until recently they did not have to be marked as copy in China and Aliexpress would sell them in 100 lots to US 'collectors', along with 1909-SVDB, 1922, 1955/55, and of course their favorite 1943 Copper cents. Be aware is best. IMO, Jim

Welcome to CT. Your 1914-D penny looks cleaned and scratched. Even if authentic, it won’t get a straight grade. I’d strongly suggest to purchase problem-free coins with eye appeal in the future.

    Genuine. $200 wasn't awful, but $150 would've been better.
