Well, I can thank Spock for my new found affinity to foreign coins - but I am only limiting it to Canadian and British coins for now. NO RUPEES! :hammer: So here is what I got today.... the 2008 Canadian coin and stamp set. It is much nicer than I thought. It contains a 2008 proof half dollar with the dates 1908-2008 to commemorate a hundred years since Canada's first domestically minted coin, which was the half. Also included in the set is a 52 cent stamp that has a pic of the first half dollar. The pic of the half is true to size. The presentation box is very nice. I like it better than the ones that the first spouse coins come in. It has a wonderful metal engraving, of what I presume to be the Ottawa mint, on the top of the box. The coin is encapsulated in an Airtite like holder with a black foam insert around the coin. The only thing that could have been better was the stamp holder. The stamps were placed in a Showguard type black cut to size mount, but of better quality and a bit more firm. I would like to have seen them in a plastic snap together holder, but economically this was probably the best option. Only 16,000 of these sets will be made. I really like the set and it was a nice surprise when I came home during a break from work today.... considering that there was a big sticker slapped across the box that said, do not leave package without signature. Hope you all enjoy the pics.
since i inspired it how about sending this one to me as a token of inspiration BTW i am going to have some PCGS graded rupees for sale from George 6. you should get into buy mode now
Nice set!!! Friend of mine go one of the stamps on a coin club letter he received in the mail. They had a previous set that was all of the denominations with the old style Canadian coins that looks very nice as well.
I have seen ads for that set you have mentioned, but I can't find it on the RCM site anymore. I looked for a while last night but didn't find anything. That would be a neat set to have. The RCM has some wild coinage. I really like the professional hockey comm silver dollars.
I believe sets you are talking about came out ten years ago in 1998 to mark the mints 90th Anniversary. They came in an antique or proof finish and have the bust of Elizabeth II.
The matt/antique set is ugly though compared to the 1998 proof set that is nice and shiny. My friend has this set at his store but lately I am very careful with my buys and usually just buy bullion or decent comics now. Just can't justify paying 50 bucks for 91 cents. Still a nice .925 sterling set though.
So when I read about the "antique" set, it really is the matte set which translates into our UNC set here in the states? Is this correct?
There was two sets. One was antique which is a matte finish and then the proof brillaint set. http://www.colonialacres.com/cgi-bin/dispitem.cgi?item=1998_antique "90th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mint 1908-1998 Issued to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mint, this five coin set features the same reverse designs as the original 1908 coins, except for the double date 1908-1998. This set is issued in matte or "antique" finish. The matte set does not carry the country of origin, "Canada". WhispTech This helps a bunch! Thanks. So do you think $100 for both sets would be too much???? That is what they are being offered for. I know nothing about these, but really like the design. Are there better deals to be had on ebay? Joe
From what I have seen its in the range of 45-65 for the proof and 40-55 range for the matte. When they first came out they where a big item and where up and down according to what a friend told me.
I was actually very surprised at teh price of the 100 anniversary set 39.99 for a set with only 16,000 minted?! sounds alright to me. As some of you know I am not very fond of new stuff coming out of the mint (Canadian) right now, But this was an offer I couldn't turn down.
