What world gold coins are available for low premiums over melt? I would be more interested in the artistic designs than any numismatic value. Also, coins in the 1/10 to 1/2 oz range for starters. Goal: decent looking, low premiums, mint state not at all important Thanks guys, have at it !!
AJ non ms how could you!!!!!!!!!! well there is the rooster, the angel, the sovereign, the mohur (not british india but before that in really worn condition if you are lucky) ducat, russian coins, nordic countires, germany, thailand, and thats as far my memory goes but patience is the key i have managed to get all of the above at close to melt in slabbed gem or better state over the last 3 year period except the mohurs of course !!
Mrs AJ all the sudden has the coin bug. She has more money than I do. This will be fun. She calls my collection/website " nice pennies", now show me some gold, lol
Tell her to look at silver they look better IMHO specialy the frosted ones :smile Some of the Australian are rather nice as are the Britannias and we musnt forget the Canadian LOL
I haven't looked for a while, but for bullion the Krugerrands have usually had the lowest premium. For regular coins French Rooster's are nice (Angel's too) and generally affordable. Here's a Rooster (NGC MS64)...
Don't bother looking at Japanese gold. Melt value is irrelevant to the early ones, and the recent ones are much larger than 1/2 oz.
Spock, close to melt on a slabbed gem or higher ...... I assume you mean MS-65 or higher ........ for those coins you have listed !!!! You not only had patience but probably a gun to get any of those at close to melt !!!!!!!!!!!!
Now that is exactly what I'm talking about. I LOVE it , and will look into these for her. Keep them coming folks, the more I can get the wife into coins, the better.
I always liked the chinese pandas, though are a little more epencive. but you can get them in 1/20 oz
yeah some were high as 67. i believe in non violence plus the fact that those sellers didn't know what they were doing helped. now i will believe i am special if i can get a mohur in 65 or better for melt. i love ebay the best place to buy world gold for cheap you just have to look :sigh: Did i tell you i even bought some of them below melt. The good old days, bowers and merena sent me their new catalog too
Hey Jack, Those Austrailian Kookaburras would make for a cool set. They are silver, but Ive always liked them.
Sorry to split hairs here, but you mentioned earlier that this is for the Mrs. How does the Mrs. like said coin? Give some examples of "things" she likes, and I'll add my few cents to the list.
She likes coins with wildlife, most of all animals, but birds, fish work well too. She was born in Rome Italy, so we are also looking at Italian coins, I think they make a Lira or something. I just bought a Krause book from Valley Coin last night after my OP, so we'll see. She has a Panda, I bought her one in LongBeach...thats what started this "gold thing" lol
