The cc is my favorite mintmark because of the history behind the coins. I only have a couple of them because the price premium for the mintmark is outrageous in my opinion compared to the scarcity.
Guess I like the CC's because of the history involved. Not to mention it's basically local history for myself. Fortunatelly, most of the coin shops near me have loads of circulated CC Morgans at bargain basement prices. Most just sit in a box on the counter. Guy~
Me, I like them. Here are mine so far... Here is an MS-60ish GSA coin A nice raw example Here is one which is slabbed but I thought their grade was off so I fixed it.
Now there's a business idea. For a small fee, you can fix the grade on any incorrectly slabbed coin with a very professional piece of masking tape and a sharpie.
Hey Bone, You could fix all of the grades on those ABONCOM slabs! How about regrading them as MS-43 DUMPL's (as in trash!)!!!??? Frank
Only have 1 myself - 1878 CC Vam 15, about XF40 coin. I like Morgans, but not looking at collecting them yet. I like the CC just because of the history, same with the O mint mark.
Love the history , plus growinging up with P-S-D-MM , CC is different . bought a nice MS-62-'78-CC raw , then a 82 , 83 , and 4 84s from the GSA sales . I Remember I paid $1 over the mininum bid to make sure I got some , didn't realize there were 1,000,000s of them , should have went for some better dates though . Anyways I lucked out worst was a 62 rest were 63s except 1 was a 64 , also 1 was DMPL . rzage
Nice GSA coin , wonder why the reverses always grade about 2 pts. higher then the obverse , at least all my GSA coins do . rzage
I've always liked the Morgans since my grandfather got me interested in coins when I was a kid. I like the CC and O because those mints don't make coins anymore. I have a 78 that might rate AU and a 79 that looks like the previous owner put it in a box of cotton balls then stuck it in a paint mixer for a week. It's pretty worn and the luster is gone. It might rate a VF but for the $20 I paid for it 5 years ago, I concider it a steal. Now I'm working on the 81, still saving my money to get it in a decent grade.
If you ever get a chance to visit Carson City Nevada make sure you take the time to visit the Mint Museum. In addition to a large collection of vintage firearms they have a full set of every silver and every gold coin ever minted there (well almost - they have 109 of the 111 coins and dates they produced), in addition to a coin press used to make the coins. The coins are presented in a lucite display, mounted vertically so you can see both sides of the coins. It's awesome. http://dmla.clan.lib.nv.us/DOCS/museums/cc/press1.htm http://nevadaculture.org/docs/dca/press/2008/04-21.htm http://www.us-coin-values-advisor.com/carson-city-mint.html
