Need to thank you guys and the forum for bringing these types of errors and varieties to my attention. I never had much interest in these anomalies, until I started searching "back" through my collection.

I have hundreds of random denomination coins in plastic tubs, rolls, bags, albums and old folders. I've had them for decades. To my surprise and shock, I've actually found many in my collection. Like most of us, I've looked at my coins many times over. What I didn't see yesterday, I'm actually seeing today!! I guess it's easy when you know what you're looking for and know where to look! More then anything, I think it's just training your eyes.

It's nice when you don't needs arrows or scanning electron microscopes to see it.

I see the hook on your 3. But I'm not sure if its the same as the true variety. The 4 looks normal. The whole date on the known variety has a bit a doubling. I don't really see that evident on your nickel. But that's just my opinion.

You are singing my song. I didn't get hooked up with CT until I had been accumulating for more than 65 years. That's when I actually started to get to know my collection.

I see what Paddy is talking about the doubling. Also the OP has the blunt end of the 3. I don't think it's the overdate.

Yours looks rather like a die crack that runs in a curve from the wrong place in the bottom up to the top of the 3 which isn't the overdate. IMO, Jim

You got a scarlet king snake and not a coral snake. They look so similar its crazy. People kill scarlet kings down here all the time but arent venomous at all.

Cats don't like snakes no matter what type they are. Funny how cucumbers are scary too.

@Islander80-83 I looked again and I think you have a linear die chip or a very small die crack in that area. The 4 is not right and that hook on the 3 is a wee bit to far from where it should be.

Check with my nickel and I think you'll see what I'm talking about. :)

I have a very hard time attributing this variety in the circulated grades. I'm leaning towards it being the die spike but the direction is not consistent with that either.

    We'll learn together.

Yes, I've said it here a few times: My greatest fear is having something rare or significant in my collection and not know it! :banghead: :hilarious:

Yes, getting to know your collection. When I look at my collection, it talks to me. It says: Do you really know me? I would say: No, not really. Then it would say: Don't you think you should know??? ;)

    Hmmmmm...

Your pictures are a bit to small for me to see.

Someone said Cherrypickers guide mentions there is a die that mimics the overdate. I've gotta find that. Any of you guys have that book?

That's what it looks like to me. That line off of the 3 isn't heavy enough. Sorry

In the condition you posted you should be able to get one on line or at your LCS for under $50.00. There not that costly.
