I just purchased this silver peace dollar on ebay. $14.00 shipped. It appears to have an even golden tone. Could be just the pic. I like plenty of shine in my old age and don't normally purchase toned coins although many others prefer them. Just your thoughts on my purchase please. Pics below. Thanks

I generally spend $16.00 when I buy slick cull dollars and yours is not a cull dollar. I believe you did extremely well.

For me, the toning is a bit suspicious.

    For $14, yeah great deal.

It may be. I am sure no toning expert. Wouldn't even have an idea how to make it look this way.

I'm not sure how it would be accomplished either, but the silvery appearance of the high points in her hair and on her cheek and neck sure look odd to me.

I've seen plenty of silver coins tone brown or gold naturally. Honestly if someone was going to bother artificially toning a coin, they'd do a better job. Unless this is just someone's failed experiment, which I concede is possible.

But even if it's AT $14 is a decent deal for it. I'm not a fan of toning at all and I still wouldn't mind having this one.

Being in a tobacco smoke filled room as most coins from early last century were for most of their existence. The yellow is nicotine residue.

You're right! At $14.00, it's not a bad deal, but the uneven toning just doesn't look right.

Here is a Morgan with golden brown toning. With the exception of the "Pull Away" toning on the date and stars, it is uniform over the entire coin.

Come on, Randy! You're just grasping at straws. For all you know, it could just have easily remained in the Treasury vault until the 60's.

I have a batch of old Merc's like that. They are almost sticky from the nicotine residue.

Where can I get some silver dollars that are not worn slick for that price? You did great.

Also have a maple guitar I played in smoke filled nightclubs through the 70’s and 80’s that is now permanently yellow from nicotine.

I'd buy those all day long at that price. You did good, Gunney.

If that is nicotine, as suggested earlier, would it be safe to give it a hot water and dishwashing liquid bath without scrubbing it. I have never, ever cleaned a coin before. Guess I should just leave it alone. Your thoughts again please. I am probably beating this into the ground, but when your old and retired, that is what you do sometimes. LOL.

I saw someone selling cull peace dollars for $14 a piece on instagram a while back. They just kind of pop up every once in a while.

I smoked for 57 years, and I played pool in smoke-filled pool rooms for 50 years. My cues never turned yellow from nicotine. Just because your guitar turned yellow does not prove that nicotine was responsible for turning this Peace dollar yellow.

Chris.... Jeez man. It wasn’t a statement of fact, man. I don’t have the dollar in hand. I’m not trying to prove anything. That ain’t my thing. The discussion at the time was concerning opinions on the yellow toning and I offered mine. That’s all. I apologize if that has offended you somehow.

You haven't offended me. I just like a good argument based on logic.
