Selling ultra-rare coins!?!

If you were looking to sell a very rare and very valuable coin.........at auction.....and for the very first time....

AND looking to maximize your profit of course........


1.) Would you first have the coin slabbed in a NGC or PCGS Gold Shield slab?
2.) Would you then try and get a CAC sticker on the slab?
3.) What auction house would gain you the most profit? And what time of year is best?

- Any experienced rare coin/rare variety buyers and sellers please share your wisdom and input and suggestions!

The coin and condition will dictate which venue is best. Show us the money!

 

Everyone will have a different opinion on whether to go with PCGS or NGC. Literally everyone here.
CAC stickers only bring added value to certain coins and brings substantial premiums to specific areas of the market more than others
Heritage is solid. Generally,
the beginning of next year would be best. All the big shots will have reallocated their coin budgets, Christmas shopping is done and over with so more coin money.

 

Throughout life I've learned that EVERY job has three components. You can have it FAST; or you can have it GOOD or you can have it CHEAP. Generally you can pick any two but you can not pick three.
You got lots of great input this time. The decision is yours and you could pay back by showing the folks what you are planning to sell. One of them may end up being the buyer. You'll never know.

Margin factors in here. For an example, I purchased what I believe to be the 3rd or 4th rarest date-mint issue of a particular series earlier this year in Choice BU at about 3.5x less than actual value. I showed it to a couple of trusted dealers at the Chicago ANA earlier this past summer and received a return of "WOW" comments. A desirable coin where you have great margin gives you great flexibility. Say for instance, slab with PCGS' walkthrough service and get the coin back in a few days. You might pay a C-note or two here and there but it barely bites into the larger margin to give you that quick financial return. Secondly, any margin you gain can be applied to the next rare coin. The discovery of a rare item can be a challenge but that is where knowledge and persistent effort come in - seeing what someone else doesn't see (variety, FH, FSB or FB, etc). Heritage is my first choice along with PCGS Gold Shield and CAC sticker. I have one friend who believes CAC is NOT necessary in the case of one who is knowledgeable - my thoughts are that data proves otherwise.

Heritage will charge a seller's fee. Legend gives seller full hammer price, no seller's fee. I would strongly consider them.

 

1) Yes, but which one depends on the coin
2) It depends on the coin and the grade. If world, no. If US and it makes a price difference, and it's a PQ coin, then maybe.
3) Heritage is a good choice for US material, for world coins there are usually better choices, but they are more work to consign with.

Will do. Although I have talked to John Wexler very recently and his health is declining pretty rapidly unfortunately, as sad as that is.

I will have to contact him to discuss some stuff very soon. I do know for a fact that he has never seen or handled this variety in person EVER. So I'm thinking and really hoping that as a variety legend, he may be very enthusiastic and excited about this numismatic chance I'm going to give him.....
