The 3 coins I won from AMCC 2 just arrived today. They have been lost in the mail and I thought they’ll never show up again... I’m happy because they will be an upgrade in my collection of three emperors belonging to the same weird family... Carus was proclaimed emperor by the soldiers after the assassination of Probus in a putsch. He immediately named his 2 sons Carinus and Numerian caesars. After only 12 month of reign (282-283 AD), he was supposedly struck by lightning while he was in his tent...though some suggest one of his officers killed him in his sleep. If he was still alive, Roy Sullivan would say that Carus died because of a lighting storm ! Carinus, his older son and Numerian his brother became co-emperor at this moment. Carinus was a real Casanova; he reportedly managed to wed and divorce nine separate women during his short rule in Rome. He was later assassinated by a tribune whose wife he had seduced. His reign only lasted 2 years. Numerian only wear the purple for 1 1/2 year. While campaigning in Syria, he felt sick and had to travel in a closed litter. A few days later, some soldiers started to smell a distinctive odour of decay coming from the coach, and the dead body of the emperor was discovered...but some believe that he was actually poisoned. What a family my friends ! All 3 coins are ex @dougsmit collection. Am I developing a little emotional dependency ??? I’m planning to change my avatar name to : Ocatarinetabellatchitsmith. There is a lot of territory between Kelowna and Montreal/ six Provinces. I had a registered letter (inside FDC Trajan Decius Aureus) go MIA between Lancaster/ PA and Ottawa/Ont. small distance. Still remains unsolved That was the only one ever...Thank God! Gotta wonder, how that could happen/ why was the tracking/ signing not investigated? Customs? coverup???? John
Carus: Carinus: Numerianus: The last one is a bit pinkish (I had the lava lamp on). The rumor is that Carus had beaten the Persians so decisively that he decided to expand the borders of the empire to India, following in the footsteps of Alexander. Unfortunately the lightning bolt (perhaps Jove's fury?) caught up with him.
The following billon reveals both Carinus and Carus, with Victory between them. It was struck in Antioch. RIC 206 B.
Nice and interesting coin @7Calbrey . Mine is a RIC 323 from Cyzicus, but the description says “ Carinus receiving Victory from Carus or Jupiter”. I find it hard to see the difference between the 2 stickmen...
I am happy the coins found their way to a home where they can be appreciated. This dynasty is not one that had become a specialty of mine so I was more free in letting go of what seemed to be extras. Below are nine I am keeping. Carus Divus Carus Numerian Carinus
