The following coin is heavier than the biggest one that I had previously posted. It weighs 70.20 g. and was struck under Ptolemy II in Alexandria as a post-reform coinage. This biggest coin in my collection has the letter " Theta " between the legs of the eagle. It's listed as Sv 463. I'd like to share it among my coin-friends.
Congrats on the awesome new coin @7Calbrey I love these large Ptolemaic coins. I have a similar drachm in my collection, though not nearly as nice as your coin. Ptolemy II Philadelphos AE Drachm. Alexandria mint, 64.594g, Obv: Horned head of Zeus Ammon right, wearing taenia. Rev: PTOLEMAIOU BASILEWS, two eagles standing left on thunderbolts, wings closed, heads left, Y/T monogram between legs. Lorber CPE 274
Thank you. It seems that many issues of these large coins under Ptolemy are being offered here. Can someone evaluate the approximate price / value of the OP coin?
Beefy. Imagine having to carry a bag full of those around for your purchases. They probably threw their backs out carrying them
Nice lookin' double ealge! Here's a double eagle of mine, looks wet because it is, I didn't wait long enough after a verdicare treatment. Ptolemy VI, 180-145 BC, 30 mm, 22.3g Zues Amon, two eagles on thunderbolt, cornucopia left sng cop 308, svns 1424
I've seen some in the $50-$150 range, depending on the condition. Of course, exceptional ones would go for much more.
