Howdy fellow coin peeps, :thumb: I was poking through my pennies for one to examine the denticles, to compare against one I found on Ebay that looks like it could be a counterfeit, and in the process of looking at the denticles, I realized it had a rim cud I missed when it came in a few weeks ago. I have no clue what variety it is, since I don't have Bob Grellman's book yet, but if you want to take a stab at variety, I'd appreciate it. Ribbit
Looks like an N-10 - http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=390&Lot_No=20243 some auctions say R-3 others say R-5. The cud lines up here.
I just compared mine to the one you listed and everything lines up except my rim cud is slightly longer so it's a slightly later die state than the one shown. Also, CoinFacts lists it as Rare, so that's a R-5. Thankies for the info! :thumb: Ribbit Ps: Bob replied and said John Wright's book on the cents of 1816-1839 is the best one for MHC's and, of course, his book is the best for BHC's. I'll wait till he sells my 1800/1798 NC-6 and then get him to subtract the book costs from my portion of the proceeds so I will finally have two of the books I need but he didn't recommend anything for DBC's or CHC's. I'll have to ask him his opinion on those later.
1796-1807 Draped Bust Cents (DBC's) 1808-1814 Classic Head Cents (CHC's) 1816-1839 Matron Head Cents (MHC's) 1839-1857 Braided Hair Cents (BHC's) Ribbit
Here's a better pic: I don't see what you saw but it may have been an optical illusion in the original pic? Ribbit
I'm not 100% sure but I think both Classic Head & Braided Hair Cents combined, are known as Coronet Head Cents. Maybe someone will pipe in on this, since I have also heard them called Coronet Head Cents but coin sites list them as I listed earlier. Ribbit
In the Red book 1975 , Lists 7 head types from 1816-1857 , they use Coronet head to cover them all . rzage
The best bok for the early dates would be either Bill Noyes book or Breens book on the early dates. The problem with the Noyes book though is that you can't buy it separately. You can only get it bundled with his book on middle dates (you can get the middle date book separately) and the two books run around $270. The Breen book is available for about $70. The Noyes book is pretty much the same text as Sheldon's Penny Whimsey but with much better plates and better pointing out of the diagnostic features. The pictures aren't quite as good in the Breen book but there is a lot more background, historical, and technical information.
