I have found that recently I am becoming more and more interested in medals, especially those from around the world. They are fun to research (frequently frustrating) and typically are historically significant in some way.

Here are some new pickups from the last couple of weeks.

The first 2 are from the recent Triskeles auction. Got them both for the opening bid.

by Breuker & Kessler, Philada., MANUFACTURED By The ORNAMENTAL WOOD CO., Philada

Publisher: John Walter Scott, American, 1845–1919
After (obverse): Jean-Antoine Houdon, French, 1741–1828
    Honorand: George Washington, American, 1732–1799, LL.D. 1822
Wooden medal of George Washington and Centennial International Exhibition, Philadelphia
    1876
    Wood

    18.25 g, 12:00, 62.5 mm

    Washington 1876 03.jpg

I have wanted a Washington medal for awhile. The fact that this one is wooden is just a bonus. Apparently there were 5-6 varieties made that were sold in a set at this exposition. I feel like I overpaid for this one but the other 3 were purchased below value so it all evened out.

Obverse: Bust of Christopher Columbus Right in Wreath
Obverse Legend: THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA 1492 WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION CHICAGO 1892-1893

Reverse: Small busts of all the U.S. presidents through Grover Cleveland, Washington in the central oval bordered by a leafy wreath.
Reverse Legend: THE PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

    Diameter: 55 mm

    Columbian 1892 03.jpg

This is a much nicer piece than the picture shows. The small presidents on the reverse are really nicely done.

At the beginning of this year, I had decided that I wanted to focus on quality over quantity. It's frustrating that I have gotten hooked by another collecting interest but of course still fun. When you consider the low mintages for many of these medals it is amazing how affordable most medals are.

Feel free to post anything you want especially any medals that you are particularly fond of.

I have a few inexpensive ones. Don't know that I've ever posted this one.

Another. Has seen some mishandling, but I still think it's interesting.
