Was this quarter just in the wrong place at the wrong time or was this caused during the striking process? If it is a strike error, what is the term to describe such an error?
generally in the striking process there are 3 sides. The (1) obverse die, (2) reverse die and the (3) collar. The (3) collar is fixed to create a circular coin. Without the collar or a loose collar you get examples of Broadstruck coins. What you see in your coin is an area of flatten rim which goes beyond the boundaries of a collar. It could have been squished by a variety of means for who knows what reasons. For instance if you have ever been in a grocery store when they are moving new loads of stuff around on a lift, some of those have metal wheels. What happens when your shopping cart hits a coin .. it kinda stops the wheel. When those lifts hit stuff it tends to flatten and stop the wheel too.
