PCGS coins now allowed in the NGC Registry

Wow, I was not entirely expecting NGC to reverse their earlier decision to exclude PCGS graded coins from competitive registry sets. This new policy is irrelevant to me because I no longer collect U.S. coins, but I am curious to hear the thoughts of those who do. Here is a link to the announcement on their website.

They are announcing this like it is some major upgrade or new feature.

How about they acknowledge that this is reversing a wildly unpopular decision made a few years ago? A decision which turned many people off their brand, and saw their business hurt as a result of the negative publicity?

How about an apology to all of the collectors insulted and betrayed by this bad decision?

Do they think our memories are so short?

I'd be very curious to see the numbers on just how many people left the NGC Registry because of this, and how much business they lost because of it. I'm sure the numbers are significant.

My initial reaction is too little to late, the damage has been done as many have already crossed their coins over or just left the registry game all together and may not even miss doing it.

The time to reverse the decision was immediately with all the feedback they got. It would have allowed them to save face saying they were listening to feedback and following their users wishes. It's been so long since the initial decision especially with the hit piece they put out trying to justify it that it seems to be being done more out of desperation.

On a side note, while I am not familiar with costs of building such a registry feature on the website the claim that millions of dollars have been put into the registry section seems wildly high to me

Not surprised. NGC is far more customer friendly than PCGS.

To me it is excellent news, as I'm registered over there, with some of my nicest coins being in PCGS holders... Going right over to the site to update things;)

Not anymore, but either way if it was about making the customer happy they wouldn't have waited about 2 years to reverse the decision. Their board and others were flooded with their customers and users overwhelmingly asking them to reverse the decision as soon as it was announced.

Had their US registry remained very active and thriving it's highly unlikely they would have ever reversed the decision with a possible exception of a change in controlling ownership which hasn't happened.

It took them long enough to correct that mistake. I guess their business finally suffered enough to grab their attention.

So you can’t imagine that very high costs are associated with IT, systems, servers, software, maintenance and staff? You could easily spend a couple million... if you want to do it right.

Jason, while I usually agree with most of your posts, you’re taking it a bit far here. Insulted? Betrayed? NGC merely reverted a policy change. Better late than never.

I said specifically for the registry section which was their claim. The servers and IT ect will be there regardless of that one section of the website.

Their website and registry section isn’t exactly cutting edge website technology either. So yes I do find it hard to believe that’s all millions of dollars would buy you

It’s not just “one section” of their web site, it’s part of Collectors Society.

What facts and knowledge do you base your claim on, that their claims about their registry are false?

By the way, it’s a free service, so why people complain is beyond me.

To me it seems like bolting Ford parts on your Chevy. Two separate companies of course they would want to keep them separate. But again the market dictates what the companies do. I don’t do the whole registry game all my coins are raw.

I wish PCGS would follow by doing the same thing. Not holding my breath, though.

You know that will never happen. I could say a lot more, but don't feel like getting in an argument today.

They have an IT department that handles this. Plus overhead, including handling customer service issues, and don't forget the slab photography and their AWS storage for the images. Very easily millions of dollars. Very easily.

Notice they only are allowing them for US coins and not world coins. A good move. Nobody really questions PCGS grades for US coins.

There were a lot of people who were loyal to NGC, and actively participated in the Registry on NGC solely for the reason that they were accepting both slabs. NGC was the better company, so we thought, because of their willingness to have PCGS coins in their registry. Perhaps you might not have had brand loyalty to NGC, and that's fine. Perhaps you don't participate in the Registry at all, and that's fine too. But some of us do, and some people take it more seriously than others. I consider myself in that category.

When NGC made the decision to exclude PCGS coins, it definitely felt like a betrayal to many of us. It was a purely money-driven decision, and not to benefit the collectors. In our minds, NGC was there as a service, and we chose that service because of its perceived values. When NGC changed their policy, with the implications that in order to compete you had to spend additional money to cross everything over to NGC slabs, it was absolutely the opposite of the reason we'd joined in the first place. NGC became everything we were trying to avoid with the exclusivity of PCGS.

On top of all that, the decision was made suddenly, and Mark Salzberg attempted to justify it with a series of ludicrous opinion pieces. It all felt like a slap in the face, driven by money. NGC was supposed to be the customer-oriented company - not PCGS with white slabs.

So now, to suddenly reverse this terrible policy, and to brand it as an "upgrade" and a "new feature" seems like a double slap.

Like I said, your opinions may vary. The way that you participate and enjoy the hobby is probably different from me. But some of us had very real and very negative reactions to NGC's policy change.

Why would you say so? You know I have multiple NGC registry sets, I even bought one of your Busties to add it to my competitive set. Please have a look here: https://www.ngccoin.com/registry/competitive-sets/196633/

    I just don’t think it’s such a big deal. It was a business/marketing decision.
