Ah, Reddit, the place where random stuff gets insane amounts of likes. This guy dug up a Roman coin via metal detector and has nearly 46 THOUSAND likes on the post.
I'm skeptical. Looks a little too cleaned to have come out of the dirt. I would have expected far more encrusted dirt than that, some of it requiring a week or two of soaking and maybe some mechanical cleaning before you ended up with a coin that looked that nice. I think the only place that guy discovered that coin was on vcoins or a local coin shop, and then a quick rub of dirt on the hand and coin and presto... a post fit for social media.
I hate social media sometimes. I can almost guarantee that if someone posted an actually rare, unique, or otherwise awesome coin you'd get like 10 likes and the post would die.
hmmm, looks like some other "metal detected" coins we recently saw in this forum.. a little too clean.
As someone who's metal detected I can say with 100% certainty that you can find coins that clean and much cleaner even. There's nothing about this image that looks like it was staged.
Sure, except there is a spot on the hair where the patina is so thin you can almost see the reddish hue underneath.
Must be some special coin to get 45k likes! I bet most folks on reddit don't even know that you can get a roman coin easily. Therefore it must be an amazing rarity!
I never understood how some things get popular on Reddit. I'll post an amazing picture of Michelangelo's David's gluteus, and get like 10 likes. Then the next day I post a pretty nasty looking "quesadilla" I made and get over 600. What gives
As bad/annoying social media can be sometimes, it’s at least good to see in that Reddit thread users sharing helpful basic information about ancient coin collecting and seeing some express interest in it.
