The 1941-s Jefferson nickel had two mint marks, a large 'S ' mint mark and a small 'S' mint mark the large being more difficult to find. The large mint mark in ms-60 grade is around $50.00 however I can not find a value on this coin in grades vg-8 and f-12, and my search on line has been going nowhere. Is there anyone of you that can tell me were I might find the value on this coin in the lower grades. E-bay has none and the reference books I have show only grades of ms-60 or higher. Thanks Bruce.
Hi, Bruce. Thanks for the Birthday card. That was very nice of you, and I have it on my mantle above the fireplace. I can only find completed auctions for the "Large S" variety in EF grades. They go for $6-$10 each, including shipping. I would imagine that well-worn examples would be quite a bit less. Maybe a couple of bucks, or so. Keep in mind that the 1941-S issue has three popular mintmark varieties. In addition to the "Small S" and "Large S", there is the "Inverted Mintmark" variety, which is an upside down small mintmark, and is the most valuable of the three.
Jody. Thanks for the reply my friend I did find 7 large dates in that roll and I did not know about the two mint marks. I will now look for the inverted mint marks thanks again. Take care and give Carolyn my best. Bruce.
Wow! Seven "Large S" mintmarks in one roll? Talk about luck! I have yet to find a single example while searching rolls. Great job, my friend.
Awesome find Bruce!! I have had good luck searching for the Large S variety as well. I bought $100 of pre 59 nickels recently, for just $135 w/ shipping! 3 rolls were completly 1941S, out of those I did find 4 of Large S variety. But, wow, you had an awesome roll with 6 just in that one alone!!
I was reading this thread earlier today and decided to go through my nickels again to see if i had any 1941s nickels. Well i found two and the coin gods smiled on me because one was a small date but the other had a lovely big s
The 1941-S Large S mintmark (?) I also have the same problem here, Bruce . Why, just this morning, I came across a 1942-S Large S in F-15 grade. As I was trying to find its value, it only had it in higher grade . It makes me wonder just how many of these were minted ? I only paid $25 for this coin , but it would be nice, if anyone really had an idea, on how much its worth in this grade. If anyone happens to have an idea on its value, pls message me ! Respectively Chasindreams,,,
I too am interested in any info on the 41-S large date. I have had one tucked away for years. In fact up until about 2 years ago I thought the small s was the valuable one!
While this is kindof an old thread, I think the values that Jody posted are still more than likely about what they are going for. The guys who are collecting sets of Jefferson Nickels will alot of the time try to go for higher grades for this type of coin rather than just a cir. so there isn't a ton of demand. Little demand = little value. The best thing to do would be to search on Ebay completed auctions. Speedy
He got on just the other day....I had sent him a request to be a friend and he ok'ed it.... I'm sure that this time of the year is quite busy for him.... Speedy
Look at this thread http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=35122 where Large s / Small s was discussed. Hope this helps.
Old thread for sure. Yesterday I got 5 rolls of nickels from the bank. Well in that 5 rolls was a 1941-S large S! Also a 1998 Bahama 5 cent, 2000, 2001 and 2002 Canada nickels. Is Bruce 1947 still around?
