(AP) — A former FedEx worker has been charged with stealing thin gold bars from a package at the shipping giant’s hub in Memphis, Tennessee. Shelby County prosecutors said Tuesday that 50-year-old Darrel Parker has been indicted on a state charge of theft over $10,000. He has been fired from FedEx and is free on bond. Investigators say Parker was working in the FedEx sorting facility near Memphis International Airport in 2017 when he took eight thin gold bullion bars from a package.
Interesting how they state, "thin" gold bars. Like the PAMP Suisse style ones or what? I would assume that these are 1 OZ bars, considering that it is over 10,000 dollar theft charge.
there were 8 of 1.3 ounces (37.5 grams) so .. which ever bars are manufactured using 1.3oz. I'm not sure which ones are. For example, doing a quick search American Heritage Bullion (never heard of them before) does them in that size. I'm sure others do too.
apparently they are over an ounce. The article specifically stated "thin gold bars" though. So I excluded round things in my quick search.
At least he was caught. Hopefully he'll get a few years in jail so he'll have plenty of time to think about it.
It could well be gold metal for jewelry work such as this which comes in all 14-24k and thickness. Jim https://www.riogrande.com/category/...=36&f:categoryfilter=[Metals,Gold,24K Yellow]
Every delivery service has problems with theft. The trick is to disguise the shippers name so that it doesn't draw attention to the package, but even that is sometimes not effective. The good news is that most of these shmuks are rooted out rather quickly.
So, this from the article: "An attorney listed in court records as previously representing Parker didn’t respond to a message." Have to wonder about the vetting practice of FedEx (assuming the previous occasion was a criminal event - Say what? everyone deserves a second chance?...a previous event shouldn't continue to be a stigma? Yeah right, perhaps he wasn't convicted, or he got deferred adjudication...50 yrs old, probably the first time he's ever done that!!! )
Yup. PCGS uses the name of one of the people in the shipping department on their label in the return address. I'd imagine their boxes are easily spotted by people in the Anaheim sorting facility, though. Heritage, Stacks/Bowers, and Great Collections also do this.
Bloody career criminal. Just a shark, looking for opportunity all of his life. Probably why he took the F'er job. "It's the first time I've ever done this, Judge" "Poor fellow, you've lived a harsh and unyielding life.......I sentence you to 30 seconds........danged democrats..... And you didn't hear it from me folks. That was the leprechaun drink'n the scotch.
Damn! It won't let me leave more than 1 "Like". I know what I'll do, I'll get all my friends & family to sign up & make them....oh, wait a minute, that'll only get you 2 more. Sorry greenie, but I will drink with ya! Cheers!
Dang it Steve. love ya for that'''' By the way......I know it was you who was my 'secret santa' last year. Right old fellow. I'm exposing you to 'publik'
greenie, thanks for that, we love Tater Salad down here. His whole routine is a great delivery. Alas, I would love to cop a guilty plea, but I have not participated in that glorious Santa event (& not just because I neither had nor could purchase a coin that I just couldn't part with ; I really am charitable ). But I appreciate that sentiment as it seems like a special gift!
The Army sent me replacement medals and the FedEx package was cut open and four medals missing. Two medals were located at the Memphis hub. I must commend FedEx as they searched until found. Sad that thieves do this.
My son works for FedEx, but he tracks shipments coming into the country. I asked him once if he ever noticed coin shipments, and he said sometimes, but they don't happen very often. He just deals with the paperwork involved.
