I recently vacationed in Georgia and Armenia and had occasion to see the coin collection at the Georgian National Museum in Tbilisi. Despite there being numerous pieces on display at the museum, I’ve had a difficult time finding medieval Georgian coins for sale at an affordable price (Armenian coins are much easier to find). I’m glad I was finally able to find this one on VCoins. It’s a copper coin minted between 1207-1223 under Giorgi IV Lasha, one of the kings from the Bagrationi dynasty that ruled Georgia from the late 8th century until the start of the 19th century, producing rulers like David the Builder (after whom the airport in the city of Kutaisi is named). Giorgi IV Lasha was himself son of another of Georgia’s most legendary rulers, Tamar the Great, who ruled as queen from 1184-1213, with Giorgi IV ruling with her as co-king from 1207-1213.
