Well I finally found it! A while back there was a thread on comm coin collecting and I posted some pics of my 36 San Diego D that appeared to have a repunched mint mark. I looked through all the books I had on comms, even went down to my local coin store where they brought out books that had an inch of dust on them to try and find any reference to this. I called NGC and spoke to one of their CS people, and they didn't have anything immediate on it, but told me to send it in so it can be graded and slabbed. I chose not to, because it would have been nearly $30 more if I wanted it graded as a variety. The other night I bought Bill Fivaz and JT Stanton's Cherrypickers Guide. OMG what an awesome book! Has most common varieties and other key tidbits of info on all us coins. Even had a section on comms. I finally found some info on this coin. My pics look exactly like the ones in the book. Just finally good to know that my eyes weren't going crosseyed! :rolling: My pics are below.
Nice looking comm , my eyes are starting to get a little crossed from looking at the MM though . It looks doubled though . rzage
Yeah, that's a great book. Bill Fivaz was one of the instructors in my grading class at Summer Seminar. One day he signed both of my copies (Vol.1 and Vol. 2) plus another book of his I have. I wish I had remembered to take my copy of United States Gold Counterfeit Detection Guide.
Thanks for the update JV.:thumb: I remember when you posted this the first time and wondered what had happened with it. Now I'm going to have to pick up a copy of that book too. Ribbit
Toad! Good to hear from you. This book or should I say books, are a must - especially for you! Last night I started to read the book cover to cover when I realized I had purchased Vol 2. There is a Vol. 1 out there! Vol. 1 covers all early us mint coins up to dimes???? I think either that or nickles and then Vol 2 covers everything else up to us gold and us comm, including quarters, halves, dollars, etc. I can't remember what I bought the first book for, but it wasn't cheap. Even after my discount from my book club, it still was around $40 or so! Hopefully, tonight I will head back there and get vol. 1.
I went out a few months ago and bought a Cannon SD870. It is a small pocket camera, but with nice digital features. I like it so far. Takes great pics in digital mode, but stinks for really close up shots. Hear is a little secret how I got that pic of the repunched mint mark. I took the pic through a hand held 4x magnifier! The pic came out amazingly well. Looks just like that on the coin too. Whatever works! hya: I must add that I use the photo software that came with the camera to zoom and crop the pics.
