This coin show has been held since around 1960, currently held at the Westchester County center: http://www.countycenter.biz/ It will run through Sunday. I took a few pictures today: On the upper floor there is a baseball card show; how many coin shops are still called "coin and card" in their names?! They have stars coming to autograph the next couple days, including Gale Sayers of "Brian's Song".
Hey, you got a photo of me and my nephew !!! I think the show is now at the Westchester Marriot. The November show is the big one; at the Convention Center they would move from downstairs (40-60 tables) to upstairs for November, where they can fit double or triple the amount of dealers/tables. I'm not sure how many showed up as I have always missed the November show but will be there this year (fingers crossed).
I'm going to check it out today for a short while so I can compare it to the larger November show. Back then, at the Convention Center, the shows were usually held downstairs but for November I was told it was on the main floor (upstairs) with a larger number of dealers. Not sure how the Baltimore Show (usually in November, I hear) affected it as I could never get to the November one. Should be able to get there in 2 months this time. Anybody going to today's show ? Post here....maybe we can hook up.
Is there a reason this thread doesn't show up in the NEW POSTS section ? Don't all threads show up there if they have current activity ?
Westchester Coin Show, 9/13-14/19 Update: Stopped by the Westchester Show this morning for a quick look at the new digs. They used to hold this quarterly show at the Westchester Convention Center which is further east; the Marriot location in Tarrytown is probably more convenient. Room size and number of vendors is down. There were about 20 dealers, and maybe 50-60 tables (down by close to 1/2 I'd say from WCC). A dealer told me the problem is that every time they lose a dealere (death, leaves the business) they can't get anybody to replace them (nobody opening up a LCS). Other observations: About 20 people looking at stuff when I got there late Saturday morning. Did not see ANYBODY doing stamps. WCC used to have 2-3 people off by themselves doing the stamp thing. Lots of bills relative to coins. I don't recall as high a ratio of display case stuff for bills at the old WCC location or the Parsippany monthly show. I'd say 95% -- or more -- of the bills were UNGRADED. Plenty of PMG/PCGS stuff, but the stacks of 30-50 bill holders were ungraded (but mostly excellent quality, a good deal of it 63 or higher, IMO). Some ancients attracting attention. Saw a 4 gram (1/5th ounce) gold coin from 320 AD that a dealer was asking about $3,000 for. Saw a nice 1928 Red Seal $1 PMG 66 note for about $600. Price seemed about right, if I had the $$$ I might have splurged. Guy also had some Red Seal $100's which were apparently part of a run of only 700,000. That's about it. The quarterly show at the WCC in November was always bigger (they'd move it upstairs; costs more for the higher priority and larger venue) so I'm curious how many show up in November. Maybe more dealers because some didn't go to Baltimore or weren't on planning on hitting FUN, I dunno. If they get more dealers, they'll need a bigger room or a floor. I guess I'll know in 2 1/2 months.
Too bad, this is the only coin show I've ever been to, and that was in 1980! sigh... In fact, my LCS was in Nanuet, NY, across from the mall, and this show was where I got a few of the coins that are currently sitting in my 7070
You must be talking about Clarkstown Coin....great little LCS. Good prices and service. I suspect most of the dealers @ WCS today weren't around in 1980. 1 guy runs it and coordinates with the venue.
Ha! Exactly right! I have almost nothing to compare my 40 year old memories to, but I loved that place
WESTCHESTER COIN SHOW TODAY: I'll be in attendance, if anybody is going RSVP here and maybe we can hook up. I'll report back on what I see. Never been to the November quarterly show, it used to be much bigger (so I am told) than the other 3 shows. It would be held upstairs at the old Westchester County Center, not downstairs.
Westchester Coin Show, 11/29-11/30 Update: Not much to say that I didn't in September (look at my post a few before this). If anything, it looked like 1 or 2 dealers didn't show up compared to last time. Definitely alot more dealers 5-6 years ago at the Westchester Convention Center. I was under the impression that when this quarterly show was at the WCC, they held the November show in the main floor because they had more dealers and could command more space. Apparently, that is no longer the case. I got there 10:30 AM (show opens at 10) and I would say dealers outnumbered attendees at that time. I stayed until about 12 PM noon and by then attendance had picked up, maybe it doubled or tripled. A friend stopped by 1:30 PM or so and said it was even busier then -- late-arriving crowd apparently on the 2nd day of this show, whereas Parsippany NJ folks are packing up by 1 PM or so. I spoke for a few minutes to an OOS ancient dealer who had 2 cases of interesting coins. He'll be at the Mt. Kisco show in 2 weeks (anybody going ?) and also the NY Numismatic International at the Grand Hyatt right after FUN. Had some interesting coins with emperors and dicatators I never heard about before. A Caligula gold coin piqued my interest -- up until the time I found out it cost $3,500. More and more of the dealers have multiple brands with which to market (the ancient guy I chatted with, him and his firm he was affiliated with only dealt in ancients): Saints & Morgans, Currency and Bills, Raw ungraded coins in those white square things, and foreign/ancient coins. Didn't see as many bullion dealers as I do at the Parsippany, NJ show. Heard a couple of dealers extolling ancients/foreigns to one another with the much lower pop numbers. Thought it might be one of the guys from CT at first ! That's about it. I'm looking forward to the Mt. Kisco show because that's an exclusive NY neighborhood and I believe it's different show promoters, so maybe it'll have different/more dealers and attendees. As of now, I plan on attending and if I do I'll report back. Mt. Kisco is a Sunday-only show so if anybody is planning on attending (and I believe there will be even more ancients/foreigns there than at the Westchester Marriott), let me know and maybe we can hook up. https://www.coinzip.com/Coin-and-Collectibles-Fair
Bummer, wish I knew about this show before 6:45pm after day one ended. Snow tomorrow will keep me from checking it out. Coming down from Orange ain't happening. Would have liked to see what it's all about and meeting some of you fellow coin nuts.
Yes Orange County. If it's not too much trouble it would be great if you could post a thread a few weeks prior to the next show. Tag me if you do.
Guys, I'll refresh this thread before the next show, which I believe is sometime in April (date not set yet). There's also the Parsippany NJ show which is the 1st Sunday of each month.
