I recently received a friendly PM from a CT pal voicing concern on the authenticity of this Makedon tetrobol. Time of Philip V and Perseus. 187-168 BC. AR Tetrobol (14mm, 2.45 g, 3h). Pella or Amphipolis mint. Zoilos, magistrate. Struck circa 184-179 BC. Macedonian shield with club on boss / Macedonian helmet; two monograms to left, monogram and tripod to right. SNG Ashmolean 3279 Ex: inAsta He even attached this excellent chart of fakes from Forums fake coin list. #9 is the only one with a tripod on it, like mine, though doesn't appear to be a match. That said, I didn't think mine looked cast. Though some of these are obvious, some look pretty believable to me. I've hit up @Barry Murphy via PM but it being the holidays he may be busy and I would really appreciate the groups insights. Thoughts? I'll also throw in a picture of the other coin I picked up at that auction. It is also known to have lots of forgeries. Though, again, I have gone through Forums fakes and found no match. does anyone see anything damning with this coin? GRECHE - TRACIA - Apollonia Pontica - Dracma - Testa della Gorgone di fronte /R Ancora, nel campo gambero e lettera A S. Cop. 456 (AG g. 2,57) BB Ex inAsta I'm a novice at best compared to the group and would really appreciate your opinions. As is stated often here, you cannot say for certain if something is authentic through pictures, however, sometimes you can tell if it's a fake. Thanks for your time in advance.
Nothing jumps out to me that these are fakes. But my eye is not as practiced as some of the other pros on this forum.
I am not certain, but that Number 9 looks very close to a match to your coin. I suppose if I look on FAC to get a larger image of that coin, I could make a better guess.
So I did look the image up at FAC. I can't save a larger image to post here, but it does not appear to be a match
Ryro, Do you have access to the larger image from Forum you could post here for comparison or a link to where it could be found. I am mobile at the moment and so it’s harder for me to save stuff off the web sometimes. I don’t see anything that jumps out and screams obvious fake to me. I also don’t see any definitive signs that your coin was struck and not cast. Do you have higher resolution photos of the OP coin? Sometimes the signs of striking are very minute and take very high resolution photos to see clearly.
Thanks for helping team. You should be able to enlarge the forum poster by clicking on it. There are no photos of the coins individually, on forum anyway. Here are the sellers photos of my 2 coins in question:
i' no expert...but...i think i see a seam on #1..along with possible casting bubbles...not to mention 0 wear on it.... i'm leary of it... the 2nd looks to be worn and legit to me but that's no guarantee either... just my take on'em....let the votes be cast by our peers and hope to coins arent...
No. I wasn't able to copy the individual image from the chart on FAC, and I can't find it anywhere else. I looked on Forgery Network, but nothing there either.
Hmm, looking at a larger version of that chart and also viewing other examples of the general type in ACsearch, I'm now concerned because of the style of the helmet . Certain features resemble the coins in the fakes chart but not in ACsearch (ignoring some sellers who've had problems with fakes in the past). The helmet's swoosh and ear flaps, in particular. Looking forward to seeing if someone with a high level of expertise will render an opinion.
