I’m in the process of moving my collection out of plastic flips and into 2 inch, acid free, white envelopes. I like the idea of featuring a photo of the coin on the labels.
Very nice idea @Deacon Ray ! I'm afraid my graphic design skills leave a bit to be desired. But you'll pull it off with flying colors.
Yes, the image and information will be printed on peel and stick label stock and trimmed to slightly smaller than 2 inches square and then applied to the envelopes.
That is an excellent idea. I have resisted using paper envelops since you can’t see the coin, but this concept may make me reconsider...
Great idea, DR! It makes me reconsider as well. I'm not keen on keeping other ephemera (auction house inserts, etc) inside the envelope when such items may be harmful to the coin, but maybe there's a workaround. Two envelopes? One for the coin, one for the ephemera?
When I kept everything in envelopes I took my old saflips and cut them in half. For each envelope with a coin, there was a separate SAFLIP half(or in some cases an old collector's envelope) with old auction tickets, tray tags, etc. Both had my collection number written on them. To make them easier to match up(since it might not be me matching them up), the numbers are of the form "[my initials][collection area, i.e. R for Republic][two digit year][four digit coin number for that year]" so the most recent coin I bought was something like JMR190023. Now that I've switched to trays I've kept the same system going with my tray tags and kept a note in my SDB explaining it.
As an old photographer from slide film days, I had quite a few plastic pages with 20 2x2 slots that fit a standard 3 ring binder. I do NOT recommend putting coins in these due to the plasticizers but they are OK for old tags. I do not save holders from dealers but only ones from old collections or those with some special interest so I only have tags from a small percentage of my coins. How you sort tags on a page will depend on your collection.
I'm a little behind, but I think the labels look fantastic, as always! Your updated posters are top notch and super props on getting your plate coin, Deacon Ray! Does a plate coin = more expensive? I'd love to get a Hendin plate coin someday too. I think I'm all caught up, lol. I'd like to try trays someday. If I do a display at church, I think they might work best for people to handle them. Keep up the great work!! Erin
While I'm an ardent fan of the Abafil cases for ancient coin storage, I must say that your envelopes totally rock.
The more I look at DR's envelopes the more I love them. I wonder if there are any printers on the market that have an accessory feed small enough handle these envelopes? It would be nice to print directly on them rather than using a sticker. Over time (and I hope to have my coins a very long time) the adhesive might fail and the labels could fall off.
There are small photo printers (that only print 4x6), so I would imagine there is something capable of doing this.
Printing 4x6" would mean 6 (2x3) labels at a time - if one could print out the labels as if they were a single photo. - Broucheion
Avery has software templates for ALL kinds of small and large printing. Dunno about 2x2’s, but I imagine they do, or you could adapt what they have. Free, online. Google ‘em. Or: https://www.avery.com/templates
I'm not worried about templating the labels, I'm wondering how to feed a tiny 2x2 through the printer without it getting skewed or off center. With an envelope that small and with the need for near edge-to-edge printing, there isn't much room for error. HP doesn't have any printers with a feeder that adjusts down that far. I wonder if the envelopes could be affixed to a full-sized carrier page with a tiny amount of rubber cement (something with no residue and low stickiness, like a PostIt note). Maybe I could just hand-feed the envelope through, making sure one edge of the envelope is against one edge of the feeder (planning for the off-centeredness in the label template). I'll have an inkjet printer to play with starting in a couple of weeks. Can't wait to see if 2x2 envelopes can be directly printed without too much hassle!
Despite having a ton of things more important than this, playing around with direct printing on coin envelopes sounded more fun than the other tasks so that's what i did today. Success!!!! I'm going to make a new thread to show the steps involved which should make it easier for people to find the post in the future .
