Happy Thanksgiving to you all. May you enjoy this day with your loved ones...Now my question is. Could I have doubling on these pennies. Any info would be great from you experts. Here are the pics I am talking about.
Thank you brother. So what would it be considered. Especially around liberty. I have put it under the magnify and I can see doubling of each letter.
I do not see any doubling in your photos. You can compared you coins on this site. http://www.varietyvista.com/01b LC Doubled Dies Vol 2/DDO 1983.htm
Jimmy...happy thanksgiving to you too. Check that site alurid put up. After you think you see doubling, check that site first before anything else. If your coin doesnt match one of the listed, it is very unlikely you have anything because if you did, it would be a brand new discovery. www.doubleddie.com is another one that you can quickly and easily look to "rule out" what you have. I use it religiously and if it doesnt pass the "VV" or "DD" test, I generally dont post it anymore just to save myself the time of taking multiple photos and all. If you use those sites to research every "doubled die" you think you see, you will end up being really good and fast at navigating those sites to quickly determine if its a possibility. The other thing that happens is that over time, you start getting familiar with the photos and die markers for the coins and years (look at it enough it definitely starts to stick with you). I find it to be helpful to have it in your brain because then when you are looking at coins you start to remember what to look for with certain denominations and years. It just takes time and Im no where near anything good at this but it does make things easier knowing how to "rule out" quite a bit of what you find. For instance, Its burned in my brain now that on Variety Vista, there are no DDOs for lincolns 74, 77 and 79. In fact, on VV, there are no DDOs for any 1979 penny so when I see them, I take a quick look for any other obvious anomaly/error/variety and move on...but dont bother looking close for doubling because chances are incredibly high that any doubling no matter how cool it looks is worthless doubling. Just my personal take brother and I could be completely off base with the way I do this!!! For beginner part timers like me, this discipline helped me cut down on my garbage posts ( at least with DDOs/Rs and RPMs little lol)
Just for fun...this is a screen shot of my laptop. Variety Vista on the left and my scope on the right makes it super easy to navigate and look at both. Makes researching easy and fun. Like this 63...ruled out super easy.
I think researching is alot of the fun in this. Like a detective. If a coin makes it through my cruddy initial research and makes it to "post" here its kind of my finally act of questioning the coin. From here the yodas and experts quickly teach me something else about the coin....something else to research or learn.
I can add that lighting is crucial to determining doubling...yours appear to have a lot of glare and that can mimic doubling. It’s worth investigating how to get diffused light for illuminating coins for pics and posting but a real good, semi-professional lighting set up is not cheap. Some folks try to make their own by taping porous paper (coffee filters, for example) over their light source, but it could create a fire hazard doing so. So research before you buy anything. I have found that low light levels at different angles usually reveals the presence of doubling or not...using with 10-20x magnification...Spark
+1. Weigh it, however, for shigs and tittles. See if it's that coveted copper 1983 cent before ya discard it.
