Featured Meaningful Coins

Hey Everyone! I was wondering what coins you hold in your collection that regardless of what you are offered you won't sell, or trade for. These are the coins that have meaning to you, coins with not only personality but history. Coins that share a deeper connection and story to you, sentimental coins.

For me I have one coin that I will never sell, and that is my AU 55 1949 S Franklin Half Dollar.

This coin is particularly special to me simply because of the moment I got the coin, and its impact that day had on my life. My grandfather who was a very honorable and respectful man who taught me a lot about life, who helped me when I needed it, who gave me a roof over my head and who shared his wisdom to me had a heart attack in may of 2017. He survived but it impacted us all greatly, we were so close to losing him. Flash forward to April of 2019 and while doing yard work with my brother he had another heart attack, It was so sudden, too sudden.

He was born in 1949, and had a small collection of his own, I would always show my coins off to him and share him the stories of the coins. This half dollar was special because while in the waiting room of the hospital, moments after I had won the auction, my grandfather passed away. It was surreal the entire day, and now this coin reminds me of that day each time I hold it. It reminds me of the strong, and influencial man he was, and everything he had done for me and my family.

Well, I can certainly understand why this coin has a permanent place in your collection. Thank you for sharing. My grandpa gave me a small collection of coins a few years ago. One of which was a well-circulated (maybe a VG at best) 1928 S Peace Dollar. Although it is not worth much and is not in the best shape, it means a lot to me because it was something my grandpa took the time and energy to save for me. Unfortunately, I do not have a picture to share.

The following coin I knew would not get a good grade. I knew it had the hairlines before I sent it to NGC. But it was one of my dad's favorite foreign coins. He started me into the coin hobby when I was a teenager. He passed away 20 years ago due to a brain aneurysm. So this coin is very special to me.

 

Great stories!! Mine was 1970-something. I cannot remember exactly. I was a young pimple faced kid totally engrossed in coins. Mom was working two jobs and going to school at night trying to make something of herself. So my coin collection was a poor kids collection. But I loved it anyway. The TV was showing regular commercials about the Morgan GSA dollars that were being auctioned. My granddaddy saw me wistfully watching these commercials and he bought me these two. They are the most common of the GSA Morgans but they are priceless to me.

 

And priceless they should be! Very touching Randy and it brought back some very good memories for me.

Mind if I ask what specifically is so special about this?

 

I don't have any photos of them at the moment. I have a roll of bicentennial Kennedy half dollars that my dad gave me from my grandfather. I'm sure not worth a lot monetarily. 2 Morgan dollars from my Aunt, a couple Ike's from my grandmother and pap, a jar of french and German money from my pap from WWII. Like everyone else, not worth much monetarily however the heart understands that the people you love had these in their possession at one time and that means more to me than what someone would offer.

This coin is not particularly special. It was my grandfather's coin that was part of his own collection before he passed away in 2004. I love the orange toning on the back

Yeah, just another person,,,I have the same exact penny matter of fact I have about 9 of the same looking pennies,,, what makes his penny more valuable than mine???

 

I have several coins that have much sentimental value. The coins were purchased with inheritance funds from the sale of two properties left to me by my grandmother. These were pieces of land that had been in my family in SE N.C. since the late 1700's & early 1800's, but due to my parent's monetary needs, decided to allow them to broker separate sales of both. From this, I took a small amount of the proceeds to purchase "mementos" reflecting the time period when the properties were originally purchased.
She was the no-question matriarch of my family... when we all (extended family) got together, it was at her house. Convenient for me and my siblings, as she lived just across the street from us while growing up. She was a great woman, and I think of her when I see these coins.

At a young age, this coin put me on a long path of collecting. Pretty special to me. Also one of the first coins I posted on this site, 12 years ago.
