I have a very good friend that is a lifetime student of the Protestant Reformation that began 1517 in Germany. I was thinking he might enjoy receiving a coin from that period as a gift this year. I am a lifetime US coin collector and have no clue where to begin a search like this. I have done a few Google searches with no success so I thought I might come here to the World forum and pose the question. Are there any recommended dealers that anyone could point me towards?

That was the ticket. Purchased the piece below dated 1518 for a meager $42.00 delivered. Suits my purpose perfectly. Thank you for the suggestion.

Your Passau Batzen appears to have an unusual error in the reverse legend: DVX.BAAR instead of BAVA (ria). This variant is not listed in Kellner, the standard reference book on the Passau coinage.

If your friend is a big Reformation fan, then he might be interested in some explicitly Luther/Reformation stuff. There are very few Lutheran coins/medals from the 16th century for the average collector, but there are tons of different coins and medals minted since then, starting especially with the first Reformation centennial celebrations of 1617. It is estimated that Luther has appeared on more coins and medals than any other person.

Quick side note: The Frankfurter Münzhandlung Nachf. is part of Sincona. But I think they do auctions separately ...
