These are pics of the 16-D Merc which I sent to NGC for grading yesterday. Please look and try and grade it yourself. I will post the grading once I get it back from NGC. Lets see how good you are. I look forward to your comments and grading. I am leaning toward a VG8.

My grade would be VG-7, but they will probably call it a Fine-12. The TPGs grade these key coins loosely.

That is actually a nice coin. About Good examples are all over the place. Good luck finding something better.

VG10, anyway you can give us a closeup of the mintmark so we can verify authenticity?

I'm at VG8 with a bump to 10 because of what it is. The dark areas on the coin worry me a bit.

VG8. Seems to me the reverse shows better detail compared to the obverse than you usually see.

    Acetone wouldn't hurt it.

Someone asked for a mint mark closeup so here it is. You guys are making me feel better with the 8 and 10's. Have not heard anything about it having details yet. Hope NGC feels the same. Stop with the Acetone. I would never clean any coin.

Acetone is entirely safe for silver coins. It counts as conservation or proper cleaning, because it doesn't damage the coin's surface.

VG Were those pictures were taken with the coin in a holder?

I only need one of those! :banghead:;)

Pics were raw when taken. I'm not a good photographer.

Ok, never mind. They looked like they were in a plastic holder.

I do agree with you overall but a disclaimer for any crusty coin lovers out there, it can still alter a coin’s look to remove organic matter if you like the way a coin looks as-is.

As a crusty circ collector that’s why I don’t subscribe to “i acetone soak every coin that comes into my collection.” If I collected only white uncirculated silver that would be a different story.

This recent pickup is an example of what I’m talking about... soaking this in acetone could very well alter what makes it special due to the strictly original current preservation level. D4122806-E8E0-4C54-9126-276BE0318BC4.jpeg
