All my war nickles have a normal metallic look cleaned or not cleaned..this 1944 stands out and says I have alot more silver then 35% so do you guys think that could happen?
To me it looks like a ground find that was cleaned up. I don't see a reason to think the silver content is off.
[/ATTACH] Funny, I am waiting for the ms70 coin cleaner and was going to make a thread about cleaning/preserving coins after the weekend.
Since they were dealing with silver to use in a minor coin ( usually non-silver) , the federal Government was quite strict in tolerances. https://books.google.com/books?id=-...&q=tolerance of silver in war nickels&f=false Second War Power Act 1942 Title XIII Sec. 1302 'Limited the tolerance of ingots to be made into war nickels to 10 thousandths of the specific amount.' So one could assume that they are extremely close. I think it is just surface differences. You would need to have an metal analysis to say otherwise. IMO, Jim
I dont see polishing lines, i see the same striations as I do on my obverse pic3. Just yours more pronounced maybe due to deteriation???
Yes so the mint wanted to do 50% silver and 50% copper and the only reason they didn't go with that composition is because they didn't work in our machines like pop machine candy venders pay phone's ext. The only composition that did work was the 35% silver 56% copper and 9% manganese. That's why our war nickle have that composition of metals.
And every war nickle I have and I have alot of them none have the silver so pronounced as this 1 nickle I have, I mean just looking at it screams silver the feel is more silver, while the other war nickles are all basicly the same,,that's why I was wondering if possible few nickles were or could be made with more silver by accident. Thanks everyone!
How much does it weigh? If has significantly more silver its weight will likely be somewhat different from the others in your group.
Lol I just cought that haha.. Idk why when I type it that's what comes up now I must have misspelled it once and now it saved that lol
Yes thank you. I need a scale cause that's what my cuzzin said also cause he been collecting for yrs!
