I posted this coin last year(?) and have just now gotten around to letting it soak in acetone for 4 days. I think it improved the coin, what do you think?

This specimen has PVC damage. The acetone soak did some good but the pic effected areas are showing thought. And that's a shame as I see a nice Au coin with great details.

Looks nicer but definitely worth less. (By how much I wouldn't know).

For my education, can you please describe what you are seeing that indicates PVC damage?

Worth less? A acetone dip without rubbing the coin is an acceptable way to remove surface grime, how would it be worth less afterwards?

PVC can look like a green crust, it can also start like a film that forms on the coin surface. Your soak did some good but the damage is done as I can see on the coin that was soaked the same area that pvc effected. 20191122_161148.jpg 1923S Standing Liberty Quarter, reverse.jpg

Perhaps improvement - looks circ to me. Remain spots no help - C coin.

start it at xf bid on the bay? If does not sell relist at 9.95 opening bid.

Got a lot of major mung off. Looks better though not pretty In either. You’re better off having done it you’re still looking at a real money coin

You seem to be confusing "dipping" (treating with acid thiourea, which can attack the metal of the coin if it's done for too long) with acetone soaking (which can't attack the metal of the coin, period -- barring some disagreements over copper coins).

Acetone soaking or rinsing is NOT improper cleaning, and does not damage a silver coin's surfaces. The only way it could leave a coin "worth less" is if it reveals underlying damage that was formerly concealed.

Thank you for the information. I'm always willing to learn by being corrected. :)

Much better after the acetone soak. If that was PVC residue, you could hardly do any further damage by using the acetone. Have you considered sending it in to one of the conservation services?

Yeah I've given that thought I just haven't acted on it.
