I got this from Harlan J. Berk's "junk" pile last week at the Baltimore show. I've been wanting a Byzantine trachy for awhile. I think they are super interesting coins but I don't know much about them. I picked this one because, though the portraits were not super well struck, there was at least a little bit of legend at the bottom right that I thought could help me ID it. It also has quite a deep curve compared to the other ones that were in the pile. I like depth of these coins. A week later and who knows how long searching and I have come up with nothing. I am reaching out to all those kind, wonderful, super smart, generous (is that enough grovelling? lol) CT compatriots to see if any of you can help steer me in the right direction. I would appreciate any help you could provide!
You should get one This one only cost ~$10. Granted, it isn't the best...which is why I'm here asking for help with it...But you can get nicer ones for not much more $$.
I know you like to do the work yourself rather than having it handed to you. Count figures on each side (one or two). Next sort halos around the heads of Christ or Mary from halo-less figures of rulers. You have a halo on the convex side. Next look for letters (few as they may be). You have several on the concave side at right. Pay attention to whether the letters on the coin run around the edge or are stacked in rows like on your coin. Remember these are often doublestruck so don't expect an exact match on every coin. Now start looking at coins identified online and eliminate ones not having th same answers as yours. Good luck.
