i know the graffiti would be post but the missing strike seems like it always like this. hrm yeah we will see what others think also. still pretty cool i guess.
The reverse was ground off -- likely to be engraved as a love token [google it]. now, just plain damaged
Some one was trying something that did'nt quite work, but i think it was done in the late 19th century. Its just a fun piece with some unknown history.
To get to that reverse, you would need to use a die with raised features. The U.S. Mint System only did that starting with the 1908 $2.50 and $5.00 gold coins. It ended in 1929 when those coins went out of production.
