    Hey all.

Have a buddy from another forum who posted this quarter thinking it's a possible error coin. I came here to help him get more information from the great folks here.

    Any help is appreciated.

OP: "I have FINALLY gotten an error coin. It is a 2003, Philly, 1/4 $, with an Arkansas back.

The coin is rough to the touch and eyes, yet it looks brand new besides the descent into George’s hair where the CuPro NI sand which gives way straight to CU. I got it like this in change.

I immediately noticed something was wrong. The side sandwich is also very bright and if you tried to scrape of more of the measly overlay it would likely give, with damage to the coin.

I cannot find anything on the web about it and don’t know what to do. I am leaning instead of fast cash to have it graded by PCGS or NGC.
please see the pics - request more if need be or drop me your thoughts.

Looks sandblasted to me.. Not a mint error.

You can send any coin to get graded.. For error examination you need to get it attributed which is a separate service of the grading company. It costs a bit more. I would not send it because it is no mint error of any kind. They will not refund your money.

The consensus was that it's not an error coin. Can anyone tell what was potentially done to it?

I mentioned it looks sandblasted. It does not look like any kind of error I know of.

I agree with Mr. P. that it was most likely sandblasted, but it's hard to say for sure because zooming in makes it extremely blurry. The only person who knows exactly what was done to this coin after it left the Mint is the one who caused it.

A coin that is damaged is just that, damaged and it really doesn't matter how. It will always be damaged. That's all that really matters.

And, if your friend asks, "Why?", just say, "Because I said so!" Isn't that what your dad would say to you when you frustrated him?:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

Sandblasted was also my first thought.
It also could be a metal detecting beach find. It doesn't take too long
in the sand and sun, salt air and water to look like that.
It's not an error, because it didn't leave the mint looking like that.
That appearance happened after. It's damage. It's worth a quarter.
