Remember the 1921 Peace is a weakly struck coin for the most part. Hairlines are normally a good sign to look for but not on the '21. This is a great looking coin. As I said, I went 63 due to the number of nicks on this coin. It would be a lot higher without them.
I said 58 due to the wear on the obverse. The reverse looks great, but the date on the obverse and the hair over the ear show some wear.
I put it at 64 due to the exceptionally clean fields. But a 63 would not surprise be due to the hits.
The slab grade is MS-65. It looks better in person than in my photos. The only negative is the mark on the neck, which probably makes it an MS-64. It would not grade any lower than that.
I was back and forth on 64 or 65. I ultimately selected 64, but it would be a high end 64. I'd prefer not to have that big mark on her neck for a 65, but the coin is otherwise quite gem.
The detail is better than average when you see it in person. The only non Proof high relief Peace Dollar that has ever impressed me with respect to strike was an MS-62 graded piece that someone posted a few times on the PCGS site. The mark on the neck may or may not be post mint damage. It has a an odd shape at the bottom of it for a bag mark.
This was a "cheap MS-65" when I bought it. Now it's a burial, but that's the way the market has been for several years.
I know this is an older post, I went with 64 but I can certainly see 65. If you hadn't even shown a picture, for a coin like this, even unseen, I'm not guessing you own any that aren't at gem level. You sir, have a very impressive collection and a remarkable eye for coins and I for one, appreciate you sharing them with us.
Most of my coins are not on the Gem level, MS-65 and above. My favorite grades have been AU-58 and MS-64.
I voted MS-62 due to the ticks on the obverse. However, despite being notorious for weak strikes the hair detail is above average so I would not be surprised if I'm off. Just sayin'. Is this yours?
An MS 62 Peace would either have minimal wear, some hairlines or would barely show any luster. I think the coin pictured is a textbook 64.
Hey I guessed it at 65! This is due to my attempt a year or more ago to buy a nice unc 1921 Peace dollar. I looked at many pictures of slabbed unc 1921 Peaces. Unfortunately I never got one and my disposible income is limited so I can't collect off topic this year.
