Browsing Ebay for cheap greek ancients, and I stumbled upon this coin below. It was up for sale for 15$ including shipping. It had my interest because it wasn't identified in its listing, and I love coins like that it leaves the fun to me. Now, I could swear I was seeing a crab on the obverse of the coin, and I had no idea what the reverse was. The crab is surrounded in a dotted circle. To me it was clear as day, now the reverse I have no idea, I started searching for dolphins and fish, but I think I found a perfect match, and no I have not even received the coin yet lol. This is from Akragas, Sicily. Circa 425-406 BC. Crab facing, encompassed by dotted circle, Eagle head right. I have no other information, but I was wondering if you guys had any input! The obverse with the crab is a pretty strong giveaway! I think I did good for 15$!
Haha yeah, I can see that! That would make this coin that much better! I have never seen an eagle portrayed in this manner before on ancient coinage, definitely through me for a loop. Its interesting the coins design left out the rest of it!
nice catch for 15$ but be careful with ebay and the greek coins, there are sooo many fakes... It is an onkia of Akragas ref. CNS I p.192 87 Obv. Eagle's head to right. Rev. Crab; below, monogram A. Recent studies tend to confirm the dating in the 2nd half of the IVth century BC.
