    No they are not silver.
    @spock1k cheers!:)
    I think they still mint the same coins in India.
    My indian cyber friend - Big Numismatician : Girish Sharma who is an importer of Ancient Indian Coins, Antiques, Manuscripts, Books, Indian Paintings & other Historical Collectiables Items told me that they still use these coins in India!

    if you tried using these coins in India people would throw it back at you. People dont even like 50p coins. the government no longer mints the denomination. Its sad but the rupee is not worth much these days.

    My sister went on holiday to India last year. She brought back all the coins she could for me but, as you may have read in the news, there's a pretty serious shortage of coins in India. The lowest denomination coin she came across was 50p as the man Spock said. I guess she brought me about 50 or so coins total.

    She spent a couple of weeks travelling around India and Nepal between her masters and her PHD. She only got me 3 Nepalese coins though. She had more but then a taxi ride cost more then she had in bills and she had to spend them :( She told me most Nepalese people wanted to use Indian rupees only so Nepalese stuff was hard to come across.

    She just got back from a week in Turkey with another handful of coins for me :)

    The rupee was 16 to a dollar back in 1990 and then dropped to 50 by 2003... add inflation to that meant that those 5 paise coins couldnt even buy you a used candy wrapper :) The smallest coin i think they mint now is the 10p coin from stainless steel. (It is so tiny it gets lost in your pocket, but noone cares...) but if i ever see those old 1,2,3, or 5 paise coins i keep them, they are really nice coins!

    the rupee was 33 back in 1990 i myself had purchased a lot then. It was 16 in the 80's. the smallest coins made today are the 50 p coins. Also the rupee has never touched 50 to the dollar and is currently at 43

    The coin with the cow on it is a two anna coin, not two paise. In the anna system, 6 paise was equal to one anna. The anna system was dismantled in 1955 (I think), when the decimal system started being used (one rupee = 100 paise). Therefore, to avoid confusion, the five paise coin that you have here has to specify that it is worth 1/20th of a rupee, which is what it says in the Hindi script. Anna coins are certainly not used in India any longer. The five paise coin, well maybe in rural areas where people are really poor, it could be of some value. But lower denomination coins are often used for ritual purposes in the Hindu religion.

    Thanks for the share of informations, welcome to the forum enjoy your stay:)

  18. I didn't realize these smaller denomination coins from India were not in use anymore. I have a 1p, 2p, and 20p from 1972, 1993, and 1988 respectively. They're still in great shape--I broke them out of a set I got for a buck or two at a flea market.

    Hi Jake,
    Are you sure the 2 paise coin is from 93? As far as I know, they were stopped being issued in the 80s.

    You can check this Reserve Bank of India site for more information on Indian coins.

  20. I'm pretty sure. I'll get images tonight if I remember (I'm not at home).
