This is my first post on any coin collection site. However I have a full set of mid 80s Saudi, Kuwait and Chinese coins (and paper). Plus a number of silver Dimes and Quarters.. However the only thing I actively collect are ALL 1982 and older U.S. Pennies. Not one penny has gone through my pocket, unjudged for over 20 years. Many in my jar are very high quality, some oddities.. However yesterday I discovered this sharp edge 1965. As I studied it, I realized the entire Die had shifted, pressing the top left deeper then the bottom right (which is a very shallow press) Not only that, but there is a second ring for the deeper inner press, as the Die shifted. PLUS there is a small area completely impressed (As though the Die had actually broken on this very coin). I hunted for anything on flawed 1965s and found nothing.. So have a look! What are you experts seeing here? The back looks to be normal. Hope you all can zoom in for the details too! Thanks!
What you have is called a Misaligned Die Strike. Caused the rim to rise a bit due to a high pressure strike causing a finned rim. It's not 2 strikes but only 1. Nothing major. Suggestion - there is a Error Coins forum on CoinTalk. Coins as yours are better on that forum. Not the What's it Worth forum. Welcome to CoinTalk
Welcome to the neighborhood, Troy! As I was reading your description, my first thought was that it was the result of a misaligned die (MAD), but because of the deformation at 9-10 o'clock, I also thought that it could be a finned rim that has folded over. What say you @paddyman98 ? Chris
That you were Paddyman! However that thick "block" next to the "I", looks to me to be unpressed. The folded edge seems quite possible too. As 54 years of grime could be hiding the gap, under the fold. I can tell you that the edges both 8:00 until 10:00, and say 10:15- 12:30 are slightly sharp.
Although I do find the flaw interesting, and it is what makes the coin "special"..? Honestly I'd be mostly into it's value, due to obvious rarity! So there Paddyman!
It's a slight MAD in my opinion. That makes it worth a few cents but you might get a buck for it. Very Minor and it happens a lot.
