Odd quarter

We recently received a rather odd quarter for change at a local restaurant.

The quarter was a 1977 quarter with all the same images as a regular quarter. However, it had no ridges on the edges, was very dark in color and the middle of both sides was shruken in a bit. I am not any sort of coin collector, so I thought I would go to the pros to find out about this odd quarter.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

How close are you to either Las Vegas, Atlantic City, or an Indian Casino?

Sounds like slot machine damage to me.

Pictures of all three sides (including the edge) would be a big help.

Very interesting. Thanks for the quick reply. We are a long way from any casinos, but many people from this area do travel to Tunica. I will get some pics posted in the next couple of days.

    Pictures can't hurt.

I'm not sure what you mean by "shrunken in". The rest of it sounds like damage.

  6. I got a half like that from a roll and assumed it was from a casino. I just spent it though.

    Maybe rolling machine damage?

Anyhow, that's why we need pictures!

Wow, how many times does a quarter go through a slot machine to remove the reeded edge? A weight of the coin might be interesting also. Could the sunken middle point to a wrong planchet? Most local casinos have gone to paper tickets instead of coins. That should make the coinage last much longer than before, at least keep the coins in better condition.
