Wondering - Often times when I see a coin from PCGS in a grade then see the same coin and grade in a NGC holder the PCGS gets a higher price. With ANACS the submitting prices are great but when I go to sell my collection in a few decades will my coins get less for being in an ANACS holder and not one of the bigger 4?
anacs is one of the bigger 4. i personally would like to see my coins in pcgs slabs if i was selling them what will happen in a few decades is anyone's guess any or all of the top 4 might not exist or have their rankings changed
Only if you get people paying for the slab and not the coin. I would not care what slab a coin was in if it met my standards for the grade. What I find is that ANACs has more over graded coins than PCGS and NGC - my opinion only. I think some people overbid just for the name PCGS and NGC.
Just a FYI ANACS just recently increased their prices. A 15 Day turnaround went from $16 to $19. They use FEDEX for shipping. The 5 coin minimum bargain for $12 per coin has a turnaround of 2 1/2 to 3 months. I've talked to them several times in the past week.
ANACS has been very tough over the past few months. More of their coins are crossing or even upgrading at PCGS and NGC. They have some conservative graders working there at present.
several decades? Impossible to tell. Solution: buy the coin that is inside of that plastic holder and not the holder.
honestly has anyone ever been surprised by a grade on a coin that they sent in to ANACS (either good surprise or bad)> They seem pretty on target to me.
Both ICG and ANACS to me seem pretty decent on the circ's......Where as the highgrade mint state coins, I would stick with NGC or PCGS. Examples can be made of every TPG in every grade being both tight and loose. It is the long haul consistancy that I feel NGC and PCGS are the best. When making my choice of TPG's at my last coin show submission, I split up about 30 coins between the 2, PCGS and NGC. I chose NGC on one coin only, the coin you see under my name. That was a personal choice after consulting David Lange in person, coin in hand at 2 different shows.
Regarding the original question, if you plan to hold for several decades, it won't matter if it's PCGS or NGC so buy whichever coin looks best or choose the least expensive slab if they appear equal in condition. It is likely that neither company will exist by then. More than likely, one or both will do something stupid to ruin their brand credibility along the way. Counterfeit slabs might become so common that slabbed coins will be less popular than now. Newer, better, perhaps computerized, grading might become available that will somewhat discredit human-graded coins. There are too many unforseen things that can happen to justify paying up for one brand over the other unless you plan to sell in the near future.
Just received 10 grades today from PCGS and am very proud of the fact that all 10 matched or exceeded " my grades " that I had them posted on my site as. Top of that list is a pair of 09-S that I had as CH-AU, BOTH came back as 63RB:thumb:, all the others came back exactly as I had them graded. 12-S CH-XF came back as a 45 11-S XF came back as a 40 31-S CH-XF .................45 31-S CH-AU................. 55 15-P CH-AUBN...............58 BN 09-S CH-VF..................30 09-VDB Gem RD.............65RD 09-VDB CH BU...............64 RB I'm still waiting on a bunch more !!!
Now Jack, when the day comes that you say every single one of them exceeded your grades - then you'll have something to be proud of. Hopefully you understand that comment
