My wife brought home some of my coins from the safety deposit box . When I looked my MS-64 1893 Barber dime had a big scratch down her face . I had her stored in 2x2 cardboard holder , big mistake , another coins stable had done the damage , the scratch went down her cheek stopped then contiued another 1/8 inch on her neck . I thought it lowered the grade to MS-61 or even a 60 , now I'm told a TPG might not even grade her at all , because I used a cheep stapler & didn't take the time to take a needlenose plyer & make sure the staple ends went into the cardboard . Its hard mylar or airtites now for all my coins . Hope this teaches anybody out there a lesson that cost me a few 100 dollars . How much do you think this lessens the grade. rzage
I remember you PM'd me about this, sorry to hear that again man. I do not think NGC will grade it but ANACS might. As far as what your grade is now, we can't tell you without seeing the coin. stainless
I'm currently looking for a decent camera or a good scanner as I'd love to post some of my coins , sorry I can't give you any pics now . rzage
rzage Just for your information, there is a jail in Devil's Island for those who ruin Barber coinage. Altho, they may give a shorter sentence since it WAS an accident!
Actually, I was there for one hour once, for fingering a Barber dime, then they let me out when they found that I had purchased a 1895 P dime for the price of a 1895 S! [true story, about the purchase. there was a little dirt where the mintmark should have been.]
I swear it won't happen again , wait my dog did it , yea that's right my dog scratched the Barber with a , a, his nail , yea thats right with his big nails .:goofer: rzage
A Barber scratching dog , A 75lb. Alaskan Malamute , German Sheperd mutt , God bless his soul , he looks like a big Husky . He loves everybody cept cats , and little critters . But now that he's older he don't even chase them anymore , probably realized he can't catch em .:thumb::thumb: rzage
I have seen coin flips over here which dont use staples they have this sort of sticky tape. You place a coin in the middle, peel off a this film and then close the flip. Dunno if such flips are avaliable over there, but it's the only thing I'll get after hearing some of the staple horror stories.
Nice Florin , the problem with flips isn't only the ones with staples , the thin plastic windows get weak & can tear in time you could have some ugly toning that wasn't there before . Is the risk worth it ? rzage:hatch::hammer:
Luckily my dog hasn't gotten into anything sticky , at least to put on my coins , gotta watch that mut . rzage:thumb:
wow...BTW rusty, that is a really smart dog you have. I mean, he was able to get into your safety deposit box and all.:goofer::hammer: stainless
Rzage, sorry to hear about your Barber. I have had this happen a few times. Enough was enough and I finally "invested" in a Flat Max stapler. Most coin supply web sites carry this stapler and you may even find it some office supply stores. I believe this is the coin collector's stapler of choice. I am so glad I got it. It doesn't total eliminate the risk of a staple scratching a coin, but it surely reduces it. I ordered mine from Brent-Krueger supply, but I have seen them else where. They run anywhere from $19-25. The way the stapler is designed, you don't have to worry about pinching the coin in between the top and bottom parts of the stapler either. Those of you who have regular staplers know what I am talking about. Good luck. Joe
