As some of you know, I collect frankies.
I have 11 out of 35 needed, all in AU or better condition.
so basically I am a third of the way done.

but now, I don't know if I want to continue. As usual, I get bored. I now want to move onto something else, like morgans. But idk.

Does this ever happen to you?

I don't even try to collect sets. It would bore me too. Instead, I tend to just collect what I like, even if I already have several of the same date and mintmark. Mostly I end up with gold commemoratives, silver dollars, and 19th century tokens. I'd like to branch out into 19th century half dollars -- but not sets.

That probably explains why I'm currently collecting 20 different sets of U.S. coins, with only four of those that are completed...lol. I'll collect for one set for a while then I'll switch until another set is complete then keep on going. The great thing about this hobby is you never run out of coins to collect.

I tend to feel that if I have one, I have them all. Pretty much makes me a textbook type collector. Maybe you're a type collector yearning to breathe free.

That's why I collect types , it leaves me wide open , any series I don't have and like I'll buy , I figure I'll die befor I ever collect every type of US coins and older commemeratives . Unless I win the lottery or Spock adopts me . LOL

Yes, Type collecting is much better for me.

    Example:
Instead of spending $1000 on 50 different coins in a set (or whatever) spend $1000 one one fantastic example of that coin type.

The thing with me is that my collection style is all over the place.

I'll buy a morgan dollar one day, then a hammered bit of british silver the next.

That being said, there is the thrill of the chase; trying to get that date you don't have.

I'm definitely not as interested in collecting complete sets of coins as just collecting coins in general. If I see something I like that is affordable I get one (or some). I may complete a set of something one day but it's not my primary goal. My collection is all over the place but that doesn't matter- it makes me happy.

    Been there dude! :rolling:

I switched over from US to foreign coins for that very reason. I quickly realized it's much easier to find bargains and build an impressive collection for sometimes pennies on the dollar. Never really could find good deals on US coins. Plus, the variety is nearly endless (so far, at least).

Spock it's al relative , whats a good coin for you is unobtainable for me , I'd love to own your coins , but I'm very happy with coins I got for $300 or less , I just bought a 1917 type 1 SLQ , PCGS MS-64 FH its one of the best struck TYPE 1 SLQ I've ever seen & I've been looking for over a year , its maybe a small nick or rub from a 65 , I'm in love with it . :)

Bored, yes, I think that is where I am at right now. And I think a bit of frustration.

We will see...I will probably get over it when I do find something that catches my eye.....

I think it is perfectly normal.

Over the years I've started about 10-12 different series and a few type sets with the intention of completing them all. Two are "done," 1 is close, and the others are all works in progress. My feeling is that though my interests can vary from time to time, my passion for the hobby has never truly wavered.

Yup! I have only one series and get bored quite soon... there just was no excitement of getting a replica of something I already had, only with a different date! I'm equally bored maintaining that series cuurent too! :)
Type sets, now thats a different thing...

Hard to say if it's boredom or frustration - I have about 5 collections going right now and it's amazing at even larger shows I can't even find ONE of the coins on my list. And I'm not collecting things that outrageously rare so it's odd. Usually after leaving every single table empty handed I will eventually pass the time exploring something new and begin considering a new collection. There's just something sad and unsatisfying about leaving a coin show empty handed.
