Glenn, what grade would you put on your coin since you have it in hand and can see what wear as that affects grading.

Sure, Jim, but the coin would have to be worn flat to have lost that much weight to circulation.

@Glenn Attalla, can you check whether this nickel is as thick as a normal one? If not, you've got a thin planchet (and I guess I'm surprised the strike is that strong); if it is, there's something else going on.

It's hard to tell from photos, but to me, this does not look like a nickel that's sustained enough "environmental damage" to lose almost 20% of its weight. I'd expect it to be a dull copper color all over at that point, and I'd expect to see more distortion in its features.

I really don’t appreciate all the mean and comments and ridicule. I am going through a lot in my life and this hobby is my escape from it all. I am really disappointed in the community as I have always followed but never really posted much. The one time I do I am treated like a joke. Other than one person who actually said something intelligent which I really appreciate. I have other coins that I would love to share my thing is colorful Patinas. If someone can pm me that is serious and can give me suggestions on what may be worth getting graded. But please no toxic Or belittling I’m going through some very hard real life events and never thought this community would be so mean. All we are doing is sharing our knowledge. If you can't stand hearing the truth then what are we to do? Lie to you? I'm sorry that you are having personal problems but your not the only one. We are not mind readers who automatically know if a member is doing good or struggling in life. Take it easy. We are not here to be mean. I myself have helped hundreds before you over the years. Many with great appreciation to my replies. If you're not happy with certain comments then I truly apologize. But this is CoinTalk.. We talk about coins. Glenn.. I really hope and pray that things get better for you. But please don't belittle us.

I don’t think saying spend it is sharing knowledge or helping anything. You wanna show and share some knowledge then tell me if this 1914-d I found and cleaned is real. It was in a bank roll covered in black grime and was so excited that I wanted to clean it off and was my first real find from a bank roll.

Looks real to me. The weight is perfect at 3.11 grams.
But don't ever clean any coin. It can decrease its value. I hope what I just said was not mean.

Yeah well I’m not a kid I am in my 30’s and spend a lot of time searching for coins and take it pretty serious. I have since I was a little kid and would just look at 1909-s vdb on eBay dreaming of owning one some day. I’ve never had the money to buy one that’s certified and ones I have bought have always been fake :( I thought this nickel was something special and having a hundredth scale that had snoop dog on it shouldn’t be that big of a joke.

No but if you saw it you could barley see anything but the date and barley the mint mark it was like black as night.

If it’s real that’s pretty cool, i have some perfect strikes IHC too and they weigh 2.8g is that unusual at all? I also haven’t seen much about double stamped dates for 1899 but I have some that I swear have been double
Stamped. I also have a 1958 with amazing patina and color and would love to know what grade it could receive and if it’s worth getting it graded!

Absent the ability to calibrate your scale, check its accuracy by weighing several other coins (try both lighter and heavier, such as a dime and a half dollar) and comparing their weights against their respective specifications. If they weigh within tolerance then, yes, your nickel is underweight. If not, then you need to get your nickel weighed on a scale that is proven to be accurate.

Until you've done that, you won't know if your measurement is accurate or not.

Done it with three scales even a thousandth for diamonds my dad owns a jewelry store. It weighs 4.15 exactly. Has any other examples been found and certified? I’m wondering if it’s worth it to get it graded. Any help is appreciated.

You could head off a lot of the unhelpful second-guessing here by weighing a few other nickels, and posting photos of the scale showing them at 5.0g. It's not that people think you're lying, it's just that off-weight full-thickness coins are quite unusual, and inaccurate scales are quite common.

As far as the Snoop Dogg comments -- I think we all know that coin collectors probably aren't the ones driving most of the demand for cheap portable scales. It's just that most of the scales we see aren't quite so up-front about their actual target market.

Well I wouldn’t even waste my time here because yes I can’t find one other example I can’t figure it out whatsoever. Same thickness as all other nickels and the patina is very unusual
