Is there a sure fire way to tell the difference between a Philly mint cent and a proof? I've looked at different books and I can't seem to find any info. I've got both coins in my Lincoln set and they both have an almost brilliant finish. I would post pictures but my scanner is crap and can't seem to get a good picture of either coin. Thanks for any info! Doug
Welcome to the forum Doug A proof will show no weakness whatsover, and have sharp, square rims, very " beefy " rims compared to a business strike. It will be obvious when comparing a proof to a non proof.
Welcome to the forum! With those dates, it's normally quite obvious to tell the difference between a business strike, and a proof. In 1936, there were 2 different types I believe, the "satin" proof, and the brilliant proof. I might suggest buying the Lange book, The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents . That link will lead you to Amazon, where they have a few for sale. It is well worth the money, and a great book for any Lincoln Cent collector, IMHO. :thumb: Best of luck to you! :thumb: Phoenix
But please, If your going toi buy something from Amazon please please please use this link http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=11295
snaz, when I try to use that link for Amazon I get a "you do not have permission to access this page" warning. What do I need to do to read from that link? Doug
interesting I bet it is because you guys arnt registered in the General discussion forum. go into your User CP then go to Group memberships on the left and enable The general discussion forum, then come back and try the link again.
snaz, yep that worked. I didn't even know there was a whole different section to the forum. General discussions, wow, I now have more stuff I get to read! Doug
thats how I felt, Just a warning though! don't read phoenixes jokes, you'll never be able to leave GD. Its an unforgiving black whole.
