Believe it or not...I went to food city today to cash in my change at their coin star....I look down and see this in the return tray. Wow...just wow. Not only is it waaaaay off center,it also looks to have reeding on the edge of the coin, nickels do not have reeding. What is so cool about this coin is how circulated it looks...surely someone noticed it beforehand.Any insight or opinions are appreciated.

That is cool! It certainly does look like reeding on the edges. Have you weighed it?

The reeded look is damage. But it occurred at the mint ;)

Based on the size of the D mintmark Im gonna guess this is a 1978 nickel. '88 and '98 had larger mintmarks. Could be 1968 but I have seen more off center nickels from the 70s than i have the 60s.

Does a coinstar machine even have anything (gearing etc) that could create that pattern? If so, you'd think alot of coins might get caught up in it.

....could it be a fake put into circulation by some bored dude?

its not fake. too controlled imprinting of a us nickel. the reeds I think is odd!

Nothing in a coinstar machine that I know of. I'm just teasing Paddy. But it's not a fake. That error happened at the Mint but I'm not exactly sure how.

Not circulated - that is just the surface of the planchet. The dings gets struck out during minting.
