    In your opinion,
what is the most over rated coin set (the one that is most collected but will be a bust in the future)?
what is the most under rated coin set (the one that is not collected that much but holds value)?

    Here is what I think:

MOST OVER RATED: 50 state quarter set

MOST UNDER RATED: Eisenhower Dollar Set

BTW: Finally added pics in all four albums on my profile, be sure to check them out:).

I'm not really sure about being a bust in the future but I believe as far as being over rated as a series would have to be the Kennedy Half Dollar. Besides the 1970-D (mintage 2,150,000) there arent any key dates and some of the proof issues are way overpriced IMO.

As far as a set that is under rated, well, I could pick a few that comes to mind right away. I've always said that the Seated Liberty Half Dime (1837-1873) is very under rated yet still very affordable. If you look at this series there are many coins that have very low mintages ( there are 40 different coins in this set with mintages under 1 million with many of those yet under 200,000) yet values of these coins amazingly do not reflect their mintages. Why? Simply no demand for these coins except by type set collectors.

Another series of coins I believe is under rated is the Peace Dollars. The key and semi key dates in this set are 1921, 1927, 1927-S, 1928 and 1934-S. The values of these coins are far below their potential. Although these dollars have always been in the shadow of the popular Morgan Dollar, their time will come.

Good question Stainless. How did you come up with it?;)

    Over rated.

State quarters by a long shot or maybe not? Presidential dollars? OK basically these are things that people come into the shop to buy ALL of the time. Most are not serious coin collectors. They're filling books for kids, grandkids etc.

There will be millions of these sets available in 40 years. Kind of like BiCentennials.

Under rated? Very tough to say.

If you want to go "modern" I have thought Jefferson Nickels fit that bill. Roosevelt dimes was mentioned as well and seeing how many are melted as "junk" silver there may be some merit to that point.

I am a Two Cent Junkie and a few have done really well in the past few years and will continue to do so. I might add both incarnations of Three Cent Pieces as well as Twenty Cent pieces.

Demand is not that high but neither is supply.

There will be a lot of answers on both sides. State quarters will come up a lot as over rated.

Under rated is a crap shoot.

It's hard to disagree with any of you guys, no fun !! LOL

Yeah, I think state quarters are at the top of the list with the Prez $, moderns in general.

As much as I like to argue with Clembo, I just can't this time. IndianHead is right there too, Seated coinage in general is tops on that list as well.

Lol, what everyone else said. :D Here are my pics:

    Over-rated:
    State Quarters
    Pres Dollars
    MS-70 and PR-70 moderns
And at the moment, quite a few, (can't believe I am saying this) Lincoln Cents.

    Under-rated:
The other Lincoln Cents that are tough to find in the higher grades, or with sharp strikes.
    RPM's, DD's, etc.
    Jeff nickels
    Nice Franklin's and proof Franklin's
    SGS stuff ;)

I think that Lincolns are over rated lol. Most collectors I talk to say Lincolns are their favorite but i just think they are really boring.

When I first started collecting coins i figured there would be alot of half cent, two-cent piece and three-cent piece collectors because they are obsolete and so interesting but I hardly know anyone who has these so i'll go with all three of those for most under rated.

I have to add that I don't think franklins are over or under-rated
they seem to fit the spot they are in
I agree that buffalo nickels and lincolns are over-rated, but not by much
I never knew so many people felt kennedys were over-rated

I think large cents are also under-rated. I honestly dont know of that many people that collect them.

And I dont think that the statehood quarters are over-rated unless someone pays more than 25 cents a piece for them. Its fun to try to complete a set of them from circulation especially for the very casual collector.

    Hmmm

It's kind of funny how people are responding.

If a coin is not really collected by many people, but I hear a lot about it, then it is over-rated in my book. For instance, there are a fair number of threads on 2 cent pieces and large cents, but I doubt if very many of us collect them. This, to me, seems that these series are "over-rated".

Tons and tons of people collect Statehood quarters, yet very few threads except to bash them. I'd say that's "under-rated"!

For a coin "collecting" forum, there is a lot of emphasis on value. It's "under-rated" if it should go up in value and over-rated if its value is too high.

Interesting definition. Very interesting. That thread on the idea to have new "State Park" quarters also got me to thinking.

Most of us prefer to have an album of 80 coins that have the exact same design - the only difference being a very small area of the coin where the date and mint mark changes.

I'm guessing the "new" generation really prefers to have a little variety and old "year-after-year" designs may well be a thing of the past.

Finally, all the obsolete coinage, that we call "classic". Do you hear new collectors getting all excited about their Liberty Nickel collection or their SLQ collection or their Seated dime collection? Nope. Various dealers and collectors have hoarded away keys and semi-keys and it just isn't any fun, nor is it very inexpensive to collect these. (Try finding cheap SLQ's with mint marks)

I'm still on the "classic" side of the fence, but I can see how a new collector would like to have an album filled with 100 shiny new quarter coins with 50 different designs for a few bucks rather than having 5-10 coins in G/VG shape with a bunch of empty holes staring out at them....

Ok. I fell better now (!!!!!)

Most Over Rated - 1995-W ASE (It's just a chunk of bullion, LOL)

Most Under Rated - The 1931-D Dime, 1899-P Morgan, and the 1927-P Peace Dollars (Checkout the mintages and you'll see what I'm talking about.)

:mouth:For sure the most over rated coins are the state quarters that in about 30 years will all be back in circulation. As people dump rolls back to the banks when they realize no one wants them in the future.
However, a really close second for uselessness is the Presidential coins. They will probably always be of some interest for educational purposes but not many want those baby dollars now so just what will they be worth in 30 or 40 years.
Under rated is naturally a big tie for so many coins. Standing Liberty Quarters, Liberty Head Nickels and the famous Mercury Dimes are up there in value but many of them are sleepers.
Irritating I just can't find that 1913 Liberty Head Nickel anywhere.:)

I'm going to save a set of MS state quarters then in 30 when people begin to dump them back into the back and get them circulated, i'll have a full set of rare-in-this-condition coins hehe.

And can someone explain why the statehood quarters keep getting called over-rated? I've never seen a problem with them. But all the presidental dollars are just ugly they need to stop making those.

And another coin that i think is under-rated are Peace Dollars. They are not very widely collected but I think the design is much more beautiful than the extremely popular Morgan Dollar.

I would have to say that the State quarters and prez dollars are the most overrtaed just because mintages are so high and so many people are saving them by the rolls. That being said I do collect them too. yes, by the roll:eek:
It's a zero interest savings account.

I think that three cent nickels are one of the most underrated sets. Given the low mintages and the low prices.:secret: Just don't tell anybody till I get my set done!;)
